Bureau of Child Research
The University of Kansas – Research and Training Center on Independent Living (RTCIL), a leading research center in the field of disability and independent living, is searching for a full-time Assistant or Associate Research Professor. This position will provide leadership and conduct research that contributes to existing and future grant projects with a focus on designing and implementing large-scale projects in the areas of independent living, employment and health for people with disabilities. Research interests may include but are not limited to topics such as improving factors associated with community participation, daily living, employment, housing, health care, and quality of life.
RTCIL is recognized for advancing independent living for people with disabilities by collaborating with consumers on research that is relevant to their lives and by using innovative methods to disseminate knowledge. Core functions of the RTCIL are:
- Research in authentic settings
- Knowledge translation from research to practice
- Training, technical assistance, and direct services to the independent living/disability community
- Information dissemination to consumers, policy makers, and other researchers
RTCIL research staff are expected to actively engage in research projects, translate knowledge to useful products, and disseminate research results through print, online resources, and direct, in-person presentation of information.

RTCIL is part of the Life Span Institute (LSI), a large research unit at the University of Kansas with multiple facilities throughout the state. This position is located at the University of Kansas-Lawrence campus.
The successful candidate must have appropriate authorization to work in the U.S. prior to the start of employment.
40% Research Management and Supervision
Contribute to the implementation of existing, funded research projects in the area of community participation and independent living for people with disabilities.
- Conduct and/or guide the analyses of data from research projects related to interventions.
- Supervise the work of professional staff and students supporting research project goals.
- Secure IRB approval when appropriate and ensure that research integrity policies are followed for all research involving human subjects.
- Prepare and submit progress reports to federal and other funding agencies.
35% Research Grant Development
Lead development of grant proposals to support research activities relevant to the mission of RTCIL, including preparation of all required elements for federal or other grant applications.
- Develop research questions and other narrative components.
- Work with staff statisticians and methodologists to select appropriate research designs and statistical techniques, prepare methods and analysis plans.
- Establish research partnerships to solicit letters of support as required.
- Coordinate input from resource teams within the KU Life Span Institute (project development, finance and planning, communication) during grant preparation.
- Strengthen existing research partnerships within LSI and with other KU units and build new relationships with community and academic partners to support development of cooperative grant applications.
15% Dissemination of Research Findings
- Write technical reports, peer-reviewed journal articles, or other manuscripts related to research project activities and analyses.
- Disseminate and present findings and research activities at local, state, and national meetings and conferences.
Provide service to the profession, university, and community/public service.
- Engage and participate in community, state, and national meetings or groups that focus on community participation and independent living for people with disabilities.
- Participate in at least one professional association as a member and in association operations.
- Provide service to the field as a reviewer of research publications, and consultant for government agencies and foundations and other funding agencies.
- Provide consultation or educational support to local community groups or agencies.
- Participate in RTCIL leadership Team meetings and events.
1. PhD degree in Sociology, Education, Psychology, Health Policy and Management, Disability Studies, Applied Behavioral Science or related field from an accredited institution.
2. Documented understanding of the broad complex, dynamic, and diverse nature of disability research and familiarity with the varied perspectives of multiple stakeholders as indicated by application materials and interview.
3. Demonstrated strong professional writing skills, including research reports, peer-reviewed research articles, other print and electronic publications and experience presenting at conferences and professional meetings as indicated by application materials.
For Assistant Research Professor:
4. Three years of research experience with research and publication record in areas such as community participation, daily living, employment, housing, health care, and quality of life for people with disabilities.
5. Three years of experience designing and supporting analyses for research projects.
6. One year of supervisory experience.
For Associate Research Professor:
4. Five years of research experience with research and publication record in areas such as community participation, daily living, employment, housing, health care, and quality of life for people with disabilities.
5. Five years of experience designing and supporting analyses for research projects.
6. Two years of supervisory experience.
1. Currently hold grant funding as a PI or co-PI for an active research project related to areas such as community participation, daily living, employment, housing, healthcare, and quality of life for people with disabilities.
2. Specific knowledge and interest in independent living for people with disabilities as indicated by application materials and interview.
3. Three or more years of experience in developing and managing project-related budgets and timelines.
4. Three or more years of experience directing federally and state funded research projects.
5. Three or more years of experience in participating in and contributing to approaches to training and research that use interdisciplinary teams and varied perspectives.
6. Strong organizational and communication skills as demonstrated by application materials and interview.
7. Ability to work well with diverse populations and communities, including people with disabilities. Given the mission of the Center, strong preference will be given to applicants who have a disability or significant personal experience with disability.
8. More than three years of proficiency with software such as Microsoft Access, Excel, SPSS, Stata, SAS, or R.
