Job description

Reporting to the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, the Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs plays an important role in the management and administration of academic affairs at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs, particularly in the areas of instructional and research faculty, academic agreements and program development, institutional research and outcomes assessment, and instruction-related activities. Key responsibilities include:

Research officer and faculty recruitment, appointment, leaves and special compensation:
Manage and administer the recruitment and appointment of research officers, visiting professors, part-time faculty and special student officers (including PhD teaching fellows); administer the RAPS posting and EEOA approval of searches for full-time officers of instruction and of research; in consultation with the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and in coordination with the Curriculum Director, negotiate salaries of part-time faculty, manage sponsored project approval processes for full-time faculty and research officers, including principal investigator approvals and IRB clearances; maintain comprehensive record of appointments, service, leaves and reviews of fulltime officers of instruction and full-time and part-time officers of research; manage requests to Human Resources for additional compensation for officers of instruction; in consultation with Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, liaise with Provost’s office on the foregoing matters.

Academic agreements and programs:
As directed by the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and in consultation with others as needed, manage development, approval and set-up of academic agreements and programs; duties include the drafting and review of memoranda of agreement with other institutions, modification of academic programs, creation of new degree and non-degree programs, and management of academic partnerships with other Columbia University schools and programs.

Instruction-related activities:
Manage special teaching needs, including math, special skills courses and access to foreign language courses; in consultation with Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and others, develop faculty teaching workshops and support activities, including teaching awards; manage review of syllabi for new courses; oversee and conduct orientations of new adjunct faculty and of TAs and Readers; in consultation with Curriculum Director, oversee academic affairs content in print and online publications; manage searches, appointments and orientations for special student teaching fellows and research assistants, including PhD students and non-SIPA students.

Institutional research and outcomes assessment:
As guided by the Vice Dean and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, develop and manage assessment of learning outcomes and reviews of academic programs and centers; collect and analyze data and provide reports as needed to the Provost’s office (such as progress reports on faculty diversity plan, reviews of programs and centers) and to accreditation bodies (including NASPAA, Middle States Commission and others); conduct benchmark reviews of academic affairs policies and staffing and help develop plans to address any critical gaps at SIPA.

Perform related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications for Grade

Applicant MUST meet these minimum qualifications to be considered an applicant:

Bachelor’s degree and at least three years of related experience in an academic institution required.

Applicant MUST meet these minimum qualifications to be considered an applicant:

Demonstrated excellence in oral and written communications and in project management and problem-solving in a work environment that requires teamwork and collegiality; strong computer skills, including database and/or spreadsheet skills.

Preferred Qualifications

At least master’s degree and teaching experience; undergraduate or graduate education in the social sciences or interdisciplinary public policy fields; knowledge about areas related to the mission of the Office of Academic Affairs, including but not limited to academic appointments, faculty governance, and education programs in public policy and related fields; familiarity with web content management systems and social media.
