Job description

The Department of Chemistry and the East Carolina Diabetes and Obesity Institute (ECDOI) at East Carolina University, Greenville, NC, invite applications for a tenured or tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor position in the area of biological chemistry to begin August 13, 2018 (a later start date is also negotiable). Primary instructional duties will be in the Department of Chemistry, the area of specialization is open and courses at both the undergraduate and graduate level may be assigned. The primary academic appointment will be in Department of Chemistry with an adjunct appointment in the ECDOI.

The successful candidate will be provided a competitive start-up package, and generous laboratory/office space in a new 25,000 s.f. interdisciplinary, ‘open laboratory’ research facility located in the ECDOI on the top floor of the East Carolina Heart Institute on the Health Sciences campus.

Minimum Education/Experience:

Applicants must have a Ph.D. degree in Chemistry or a closely related field, such as Biochemistry or Molecular Biology. For appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor, the successful candidate is expected to establish a collaborative, synergistic, productive and externally funded research program, and to be an excellent teacher at the undergraduate and graduate levels. For appointment at the rank of Associate Professor, the successful candidate must have an established research program with current NIHNSF, or equivalent extramural research funding. The successful applicant’s research activities must align with the departmental strategic plan to expand efforts and capabilities toward the study of complex chemical systems in a collaborative manner, and with university-wide research foci in Biomedical Science and Bioengineering and/or Chronic Diseases. Candidates should have chemistry-centered research programs that address metabolic health and disease.

Those with research interests in the following areas will be considered:

  • metabolic biochemistry (carbohydrate, lipid, integrative metabolism)
  • chemical biology utilizing organic synthetic and/or analytical chemistry approaches
  • structural/protein chemistry with emphasis on structure/function of enzymes important to metabolism.

The Department of Chemistry is one of 16 departments in the Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences at East Carolina University. The department has 27 research and teaching faculty; it offers BS, BA and MS degrees and a PhD through participation in the Interdisciplinary Doctoral Program in the Biological Sciences (IDPBS) and strong collaborative ties with faculty members at the Brody School of Medicine. The department has access to analytical and instrumental services via the Pharmaceutical Development Center of Excellence.
