The Assistant Professor is a member of the ranked faculty with an intermediate academic rank who has demonstrated achievement in the areas of teaching, research, and professional service appropriate to the discipline. The Assistant Professor’s teaching responsibilities are assigned by the academic department head and may include serving as an academic advisor. The Assistant Professor engages in scholarly activities beyond those associated with teaching and is expected to demonstrate professional productivity in research, based upon the availability of resources and consistent with the mission of the University.

Description of Primary Duties
We seek an experienced, user-centered leader who has extensive knowledge of library technical services, including best practices and latest trends in the evolving role of libraries. Through effective and efficient leadership, the incumbent will plan, implement, and evaluate operations, establish policies and procedures, set priorities, liaise with the Content Management Team, and manage all operational activities of the Resource Management and Discovery programs. This includes acquisitions, cataloging, discovery/accessibility, metadata, serials, and physical processing of materials for the Libraries’ collections. A key objective will be to balance operational functions with library initiatives and services. The Director must foster an environment of effective communication and collaboration with departmental and organizational faculty and staff.   • Provides vision and direction for the program through strategic planning and the coordination of operations ensuring that library materials are discoverable in a timely and cost effective fashion
  • Effectively manages a resource budget
  • Leads, prioritizes, establishes workloads/deadlines, and sets expectations for all activities of the programs
  • Attracts, motivates, and manages exceptional talent in an evolving work environment
  • Provides instruction sessions to colleagues and others about evolving technologies and their implementation in the Libraries

  • Mentors direct reports to ensure they have support needed to perform duties and develop professionally while fostering an environment that promotes exploration, innovation and implementation of new approaches
  • Facilitates a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of different cultures or backgrounds
  • Develops, recommends, reviews, creates, and communicates policies, budgets, processes and procedures with appropriate input and/or approval from Library Administration, other Library Units, MSU Administrative Offices and other consortium institutions as necessary
  • May cover essential work when the responsible employee is absent
  • Maintains professional growth by broadening up-to-date knowledge of relevant, evolving, and best practices in academic librarianship for self and others
  • Maintains appropriate professional activities and contributes to the development of the library profession and/or subject-specific discipline through scholarship, presentations, and publications appropriate to rank.
  • Serves on Library, Campus, University, regional, or national professional committees

Minimum Acceptable Qualifications 
The minimum acceptable qualifications for the position of Assistant Professor are prescribed in the Faculty Handbook. The ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds is required.

Additional Qualifications

  • Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program or equivalent
  • Minimum of three years of post-MLS or equivalent experience in at least one area of work performed in the unit, such as managing electronic resource and serial acquisitions, cataloging/metadata, and/or knowledge-base management operations
  • Supervisory experience
  • Demonstrated ability to manage workflow
  • Demonstrated ability to manage budgets
  • Demonstrated understanding of cataloging and metadata
  • Demonstrated understanding of electronic and print resource management
  • Knowledge of and/or experience with technical services concepts, standards, operations and functions, such as MARCRDA, LC subject headings and classification, and Electronic Resource Management
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of multicultural and diversity issues
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to work successfully in a collaborative environment with a broad range of people from diverse backgrounds, including colleagues, faculty, students, donors, and alumni
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and independently with various groups within a complex organization and evolving team environment
  • A record of leadership, contribution, and involvement in relevant professional activities, organizations, and/or consortia
  • Current knowledge of best practices, evolving practices, and future directions in technical services
  • Related experience in developing and implementing new ideas in a complex organization
