General Summary of Position:

The Department of Economics at the University of Massachusetts invites applications for one tenure-track position at the assistant professor rank beginning September 2018, in the area of applied economics, environmental economics or urban economics. The department offers a bachelor’s degree in economics and offers courses in PhD programs in global studies program within the college and the PhD program in the business school. The department consists of eight full time faculty, with expertise in applied microeconomics, development economics, health economics, industrial organization, international trade, labor economics, macroeconomics, and public economics and a collective record of accomplishment of extensive research productivity. University of Massachusetts Lowell is a member institution of the five-campus University of Massachusetts system. Located approximately half an hour northwest of Boston in Lowell, the university has approximately 18,000 undergraduate and graduate students.

The successful candidate will enhance the department’s expertise in applied economics, environmental economics, or urban economics.  The position will also contribute to the university’s interdisciplinary research enterprise, and represent the university in providing economic analysis to the media. The appointee is expected to maintain an active research agenda leading to publications in peer-reviewed journals, and should demonstrate promise to develop a viable externally funded research program. Preference will be given to applicants who can demonstrate evidence of research productivity.

Beyond conducting an active research program, we will expect the selected candidate to provide high quality instruction and to make service contributions to the department, college, and University.   Instructional duties will include teaching courses in introductory economics, statistics, and upper-level undergraduate and graduate courses in applied economics, environmental economics, or urban economics.

The emphasis of the university on interdisciplinary programs will provide many opportunities to the selected candidate to teach and mentor students in global studies and business school PhD programs, and master’s program in public administration.

Minimum Qualifications (Required):

  • Ph.D. in Economics, ABD will be considered but doctoral requirements must be completed by the time of appointment
  • Ability to teach courses in introductory economics, statistics, and upper-level undergraduate and graduate courses in environmental economics, urban economics, or other fields of applied economics
  • The ability to work effectively with diverse groups

  • Well-articulated research program and record of peer-reviewed publications
