Essential Job Duties:

The Assistant Professor position will serve as the Director of the Seafood Technology Program based at NC State’s Center for Marine Sciences and Technology (CMAST). The position will be based at CMAST facility. The Assistant Professor position will foster development of integrated programs in the established area or research within NCSU and build strong community partnerships with other state and federal organizations in aquatic food supply and food security. The position will be expected to work directly with and support the needs of stakeholders within the state, region, and nationally.

The position is expected to strengthen the department’s research capacity in safe, quality foods from fresh and salt water environments, and to provide leadership at the national and international level for sustainable seafood supply in developed and developing countries. The position is expected to mentor graduate and undergraduate students in their research. This work will elevate the department’s research reputation in aquatic food supply and food security based on expected state and national policy changes to increase domestic production capacity for land-based and open ocean aquaculture.

The position is expected to actively seek external funding through grants from state and national programs as well as contracts with trade associations and industry partnerships. The position is expected to interact and collaborate with many campus-related research stations, including, but not limited to: Marine Aquaculture Research Center, Pamlico Aquaculture Field Laboratory, Mountain Horticulture Crops Research and Extension Center.

Other Work/Responsibilities:

This position will need to travel off-site on occasion alone for meeting with clients, or consultation with colleagues at the NCSURaleigh campus or other locations, or to conduct research, and must independently be able to travel from location to location without reliance on others or the advanced notice that is often required of alternative means of transportation.

Minimum Experience/Education:

Requires doctor’s degree, an equivalent degree, or equivalent professional experience.

Required Qualifications:

  • Demonstrate competencies in oral and written communications as well as interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated skills in public presentations, communications, and organized teamwork and leadership.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Expertise and experience in processing technology, safety, and food security issues related to the supply of aquatic food products.
  • Experience with the Seafood HACCP Alliance, leading to trainer status.
  • Expertise and experience in laboratory and/or field research on technical issues related to quality, safety and nutrition of seafood or related products.

Required license or certification:

  • A valid drivers license is required for travel. NC drivers license required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained.
