Assistant Professor of Drawing

The Department of Art + Art History at Florida International University invites applications for a nine-month, tenure-track, Assistant Professor of Drawing. Salary is commensurate with experience.

The successful candidate will be an artist with a significant record of research/creative practice demonstrating an interdisciplinary approach to drawing, and a strong record of professional achievement. The individual will possess the ability to cross disciplines in teaching, with a strong focus on drawing skills that have the potential to manifest in both the analog and digital realms. The successful candidate will provide leadership in the development and shaping of the drawing curriculum in concert with a full-time faculty committed to critical inquiry across disciplines. An ability to address concepts and methodologies pertinent to a contemporary drawing practice is necessary. Preference will be given to candidates showing evidence of an ability to engage in the theoretical and critical discourses of contemporary art in practice and pedagogy, exceptional teaching, as well as a distinct and innovative vision for curriculum.

Additionally, the preferred candidate should have academic leadership experience or potential and have excellent organizational and communication skills. A demonstrated interest in and concern for a global perspective are preferred, as we are seeking diverse and enthusiastic applicants with wide ranging intellectual and creative interests to compliment and build upon our department’s existing capabilities. The successful candidate will demonstrate a distinct and progressive vision for curriculum development that capitalizes upon the transformative capacity of contemporary drawing practices.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain an active creative research practice with a record of achievement
  • Teach courses primarily in drawing, and including undergraduate independent studies and thesis
  • Initial teaching responsibilities include four undergraduate courses per year primarily in drawing.
  • Develop drawing curricula emphasizing a diversity of conceptual and technical practices
  • Grant-writing, mentoring, and service to the department and University
  • Ability to engage in cross-disciplinary teaching and interacting with all studio students in critiques and studio visits
  • Additionally, opportunities exist to teach within the MFA program, independent studies and undergraduate thesis.
  • The successful candidate is also expected to contribute to the Foundations program.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • The successful candidate will be an accomplished artist/professional with a vibrant studio and/or professional practice and exceptional teaching skills.
  • MFA degree from an accredited institution with an emphasis in Drawing/Studio Art.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of historical and contemporary trends in the field of drawing.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Minimum of three years college-level teaching experience beyond graduate school.
  • Experience with teaching methods based on the integration of new technologies across disciplines is desirable.
  • Interest in interdisciplinary research and practice linking art and design to other fields in the humanities, natural sciences, engineering, and technology
