Nature & Purpose of Position/Usual Duties:

The Instruction Librarian serves as the Library’s expert for instructional methodologies and techniques, and works collaboratively with the Research and Instruction (R&I) librarians to develop and implement a programmatic approach to in-person and online information literacy instruction.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develops and maintains expertise on current trends in learning theories, information literacy, and instructional design and technologies
  • Creates and facilitates professional development training for library personnel on the techniques, evidence-based best practices, and emerging trends in library and information literacy instruction
  • Leads the R&I librarians in:
    • Designing and delivering high-quality face-to-face and online library instruction
    • Creating guides, web-based tutorials, and content/subject modules that teach critical thinking, research skills, and information literacy
  • Participates in the regular library instruction rotations for introductory English and First Year Experience courses; provides library instruction, embedded librarianship services, and research assistance for other courses, groups, and individuals as needed or assigned
  • Oversees the quantitative and qualitative assessment of library instructional program; identifies ways to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of instructional efforts
  • Contributes to the continuing development of credit-bearing library courses, with option to participate in the course instruction rotation
  • Collaborates with other library colleagues to design and implement outreach services to meet information needs of students and promote awareness of library services and resources
  • Participates in the regular reference rotation, including evening and weekend hours
  • Maintains a working knowledge of the library’s collections and resources; contributes to the library’s collection development efforts and assumes collection development responsibilities for assigned subject areas
  • Participates in professional activities, professional development, scholarly research, publication, and service activities as outlined in Academic Policy Statement 900417, Faculty Reappointment, Tenure, and Promotion

Sam Houston State University (known as SHSU or Sam) was founded in 1879 and is the third oldest public institution of higher learning in the State of Texas.
