Job description

The Department of Environmental, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at UMass Lowell seeks to hire a tenure track Assistant/Associate Professor in Hydrogeology/Hydrology. The prospective candidate’s fields of expertise include groundwater hydrology, surface water and watershed hydrology, hydrometeorology, or water quality. Experience using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and/or remote sensing techniques is highly desired. The candidate is expected to build cross-disciplinary collaborations inside and outside the department in areas such as atmospheric dynamics, climatology, geomorphology, environmental pollution, and/or biogeochemical cycles. We seek promising candidates to build a successful and vibrant research program and to contribute to teaching and service in environmental and earth system sciences on our campus. Prospective candidates are expected to teach hydrogeology courses at the undergraduate/graduate level and develop new courses in their specific field of expertise; ability to teach GIS or remote sensing is also desired.

Position duties and responsibilities include: lecturing at the undergraduate and graduate level at a nationally ranked research university; mentoring and advising of undergraduate and graduate students as well as of postdoctoral fellows; building of a vigorous externally funded research program through grant proposal writing and program building; maintaining a publication record and presenting scholarly work at professional conferences or workshops; and performing academic services inside and outside the University.

In addition to the broad range of research interests within the Department of Environmental, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences and the Kennedy College of Sciences (https://www.uml.edu/sciences/), U Mass Lowell has a diverse group of faculty working on water quality within the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. The Department of Environmental, Earth and Atmospheric Science (EEAS) offers Bachelor of Science degrees in Environmental Sciences with three program options: Atmospheric Science, Environmental Studies, and Environmental Geoscience. In addition, EEAS offers minors in Geoscience, and Climate Change and Sustainability. At the graduate level, EEAS offers Master of Science and Professional Master Science degrees and Graduate Certificates with options in Environmental Geoscience and Atmospheric Sciences. EEAS aims to build a new PhD option starting in 2019.

Minimum Qualifications (Required):

  • PhD in Hydrology, Hydrometeorology, Hydrogeology, or in a closely related field
  • The ability to work effectively with diverse and interdisciplinary groups

 Additional Considerations:

  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching, research, and other scholarly activities at the level appropriate with the academic rank
  • Excellent communication skills both verbal and written
  • Postdoctoral research experience
