The Faculty of Liberal and Fine Arts is pleased to invite applications for the position of Assistant/Associate Professor, Journalism and Communication. This full-time appointment will begin 2 August 2018.
The Department of Journalism and Communication is seeking a faculty colleague with a strong commitment to undergraduate instruction; knowledge of current trends in media and pedagogy; evidence of excellence in teaching; and evidence of scholarly research. The Department offers a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Media Journalism which emphasizes real-world issues and challenges. Students develop experience in a variety of platforms encompassing print, broadcast, online and digital media. Students are exposed to a range of generalist and specialist areas; gain a focused view of journalism policy and practice in the national and international arenas; develop essential skills and an understanding of the cultural, political and economic significance of the press and its associated industries. Additionally, the Department is responsible for the delivery of communication courses in fulfillment of the University’s General Education Humanities requirement. Responsibilities. Teach general communication and journalism courses, including production courses in all levels of sound production, radio production, digital photojournalism, digital video production, and online media production including newspaper, magazine, blogs and vlogs; engage in research; assist in securing external grants and other funding opportunities; participate in curriculum review, revision and design; develop and participate in departmental projects; contribute to the development of teaching materials; serve on departmental, school and university-wide committees.
Qualifications. Candidates must have an earned PhD in Media Journalism or Mass Communication or a related field from an accredited institution; excellent undergraduate teaching experience; and an active research agenda.
Setting. The University of The Bahamas (UB) is a vital catalyst for national development. Chartered on 10th November 2016, UB had its genesis in The College of The Bahamas which was established in 1974. Since 1995, the institution’s academic offerings have expanded through the introduction of baccalaureate degree programmes offered across a broad range of approximately 60 majors. Master’s degree programmes have included an MBA and an MSc in Reading and Inclusive Education as well as graduate degree programmes offered in collaboration with various US universities. UB operates from the Oakes Field Campus and the Grosvenor Close Centre in New Providence; UB-North in Grand Bahama; and the Gerace Research Facility in San Salvador. Additional sites are planned for throughout the archipelago.
