THE UNIVERSITY
Sonoma State University’s beautiful 274-acre campus is located in Sonoma County wine country, an hour north of San Francisco. FACULTY RESPONSIBILITES
In addition to teaching and scholarship, faculty are expected to engage in service to the department, school, and community. Sonoma State is committed to the Teacher/Scholar model and places an emphasis on faculty support of undergraduate and graduate research. THE DEPARTMENT
The Department of Biology offers B.A., B.S. and M.S. degrees and has 11 tenured or tenure-track faculty members who conduct research in a wide range of disciplines, including cell biology, ecology, environmental microbiology, evolutionary genetics, marine biology, molecular immunology and physiology. The Department has three greenhouses, a recirculating seawater system, a core genomics facility and facilities for cell culture. Sonoma State University is home to the Center for Environmental Inquiry, which manages Galbreath Wildlands Preserve (3,670 acres), Fairfield Osborn Preserve (450 acres) and Los Guillicos Preserve (40 acres). Department members make use of advanced GIS facilities in the Department of Geography, Environment and Planning. In addition to research instruments housed in the Department, Biology faculty members have access to the Keck Microanalysis Laboratory. Faculty members also collaborate with scientists at other universities, nature preserves, field stations, and nearby marine laboratories to achieve their teaching and research goals. DUTIES OF THE POSITION
The Department of Biology at Sonoma State University seeks to hire a highly motivated and productive scientist for a tenure-track position in Community Ecology. The candidate must have a proven track record of publication in peer-reviewed journals and will be expected to develop and maintain an externally funded research program. We are interested in candidates that work in terrestrial (above ground and/or below ground) or marine systems. We are especially interested in candidates whose research program uses a range of techniques that include field approaches to examine community processes. We seek a dynamic teacher-scholar with a strong commitment to undergraduate and graduate education and the ability to attract and mentor students in our graduate program. Teaching responsibilities include introductory, upper-division, and graduate classes, and for this position may include ecology or marine ecology. The candidate will also have the opportunity to contribute to other courses, which could include an offering in their area of specialty.

PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS
To be recommended for appointment, the candidate must have:
A Ph.D. in the biological sciences and post-doctoral research experience. Desired qualifications include expertise in community ecology, and teaching and student mentoring experience at the undergraduate level.

To be recommended for tenure, the candidate must demonstrate satisfactory performance in four areas: teaching effectiveness; scholarship, research, creative achievement and professional development; service to the University; and public service and service to the community. Although tenure may be granted at any time, contract provisions specify that “the normal period of probation shall be a total of six (6) years of full-time probationary service and credited service, if any. Any deviation from the normal six (6) year probationary period shall be the decision of the President following his/her consideration of recommendations from the department or equivalent unit and appropriate administrator(s).” Tenure is required for promotion above the level of Associate Professor.

RANK AND SALARY
Salary, service credit, and rank (when appropriate) depends upon academic preparation and professional experience.

The approximate salary range for this position is: $70,000 -$74,000
