Job description

Samford University’s Howard College of Arts and Sciences invites individuals interested in serving in a Christian university environment to apply for the position of Chair of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the full professor rank, beginning August 2019. This tenure-track full-time faculty position is a 9-month appointment.

The chair will maintain a research program, collaborate with other science faculty at Samford, stimulate undergraduate research, assist with faculty and curriculum development, recruit prospective students and represent the department faculty to the administration. The department chair will receive one course release per semester to facilitate the duties and responsibilities of the position.

Qualified candidates will hold a Ph.D. degree in a chemical science and have an established history of excellence in research, teaching and leadership. They also will have attained the rank of full professor or held the rank of associate professor (or the international equivalent) for at least three years at an accredited institution of higher education. All areas of expertise will be considered, with preference given to physical chemistry or biochemistry. The successful candidate will demonstrate a record of publication and achievement commensurate with full professor rank in the Department of Chemistry at Samford University.

Candidates must have a demonstrated history of effective collaborative and collegial leadership with evidence of judicious use of fiscal and spatial resources, and of active scholarship that incorporates students (particularly students from groups underrepresented in science) into research activities, presentations and publications. Candidates must have experience teaching undergraduate-level chemistry courses in an undergraduate-focused environment, and demonstrate successful application of principles of engaged and innovative teaching.
