The Department of Biomedical and Nutritional Sciences (BNS) at UMass Lowell seeks a visionary leader for the position of Department Chair. The appointment is expected to be at the level of Associate or Full Professor with tenure.

The Department of Biomedical and Nutritional Sciences is located in UMass Lowell’s College of Health Sciences, a dynamic, growing College that prepares professionals and scientists in a wide range of health areas. The department is made up of 21 faculty and 5 staff. Eight new energetic and engaged faculty have been hired in the last two years due to expansion and faculty retirements. A large research program with vibrant community partnerships and engagement opportunities enrich and support educational programs.

The Chair’s mission is to promote the academic and intellectual growth of the department and ensure effective use of resources to meet the objectives of the College and achieve student learning. The Department and College have leadership teams that support the Chair in carrying out the academic mission of the Department.

The Department offers three undergraduate degrees (Clinical Sciences, Medical Laboratory Sciences, and Nutritional Sciences) and three master’s degrees (Clinical Sciences, Nutrition, and Pharmaceutical Sciences). Faculty also participate in doctoral programs in Pharmaceutical Sciences and Biomedical Engineering & Biotechnology (BMEBT). The Department provides core instructional services for all undergraduate programs in the College of Health Sciences, including Exercise Physiology, Nursing, and Public Health, as well as graduate programs in Physical Therapy and Public Health. Educational strategies include classes taught by highly-qualified faculty, pertinent practicum, and hands-on laboratory experiences.

The Department has active and well-funded research in clinical sciences, microbiology, and nutrition. The Chair will coordinate and facilitate program growth and development and guide future faculty hiring.

Minimum Qualifications: -PhD, ScD or other earned doctorate in the life sciences with a health emphasis

  • Strong track record in research and publication in peer-reviewed journals
  • Evidence of an independent research program and extramural funding
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching, research, scholarship and service
  • The ability to work effectively with diverse groups
  • Excellent leadership and interpersonal skills
  • Previous rank of associate or full professor with tenure

Preferred Qualifications: -Experience in prior leadership roles and ability to successfully collaborate with the faculty, the Dean and upper administration

  • Experience recruiting faculty with strong research agendas and mentoring them through the tenure process
  • Experience in undergraduate, graduate, and accredited programs, with the ability to develop, implement and evaluate curricula
  • Experience in fostering partnerships within the university and with outside partners

Salary: Salary commensurate with experience
