The Department of Communication Arts at Lee University, Cleveland, TN, seeks exceptional candidates for a full-time faculty position in Journalism. Candidates with a relevant PhD may apply for a tenure track position with a rank of assistant professor or higher. Well qualified candidates with a master’s degree and professional experience will be considered for the rank of lecturer. Individuals from underrepresented populations are strongly encouraged to apply. This position is expected to begin August 1, 2019.
The Department of Communication Arts houses majors in Art, Theatre, Communication and Digital Media Studies. In our program, Journalism is an emphasis within the Digital Media Studies major and combines a focus on good reporting and writing skills with basic knowledge in multimedia journalism. The successful candidate will teach courses including Principles of Journalism, News Reporting and Writing, and Feature Writing. Ability to teach courses in basic media production would also be valuable. Faculty in our department often teach across discipline lines, so there is the opportunity to teach other types of communication and digital media studies classes – as well as special interest topics in journalism – depending on areas of interest and expertise.
As part of the teaching load, the journalism faculty also sponsors the Lee student-run online newspaper, the Lee Clarion. This responsibility includes recruiting the editorial staff, providing guidance and training for editors and staff writers, coordinating with the Lee administration, and supervising a practicum course in news writing. The Clarion publishes through a website and an app, with occasional print editions.
Lee University faculty candidates are expected to demonstrate the following: a strong Christian commitment, compatibility with the university’s lifestyle covenant, teaching ability at the college level, a willingness to mentor students academically and professionally, and the ability to integrate Christian faith into academic studies.
