Position Overview:

Visiting faculty are employed by the university to teach or perform research for a limited time. This is a non-tenure track, temporary position. Service or research may be expected.

Department Specific Essential Job Functions:

The University of Central Oklahoma Department of Design invites applications for a Full-Time, Temporary, Non Tenure-Track, Visiting Assistant Professor in Graphic Design.

This position will include academic, creative, and service responsibilities in a Design Department offering B.F.A. degrees in Graphic and Interior Design.

M.F.A. Degrees is Design and Illustration are also a part of this teaching position.

UCO Design seeks dynamic and motivated candidates with a high level of creative industry, social engagement, and a commitment to department participation whose practice and teaching experiences encompass the following:

  • Design for Good through student run studios
  • Package design
  • Letterpress printing
  • Design foundations

A strong knowledge of typography is required.

Preference will be given to candidates who are also able to demonstrate experience with

  • Digital Design and Emerging Technologies such as: 3D modeling and printing, web or mobile applications, motion
  • Design Thinking

The ability to teach design drawing with a focus on constructed forms (consistent with the design of objects/forms/characters that do not yet exist) as opposed to direct observational drawing skills (traditional still life drawing) would also be valued.

Teaching responsibilities may include undergraduate courses in Design Foundations, Advanced Letterpress, Typography, Computer Graphics, Brand Development, Professional Practice, Internship in Design and may involve other graphic design courses as needed.

This position requires a commitment to engage in research/creative/scholarly activity in your area of specialization at local, regional, national and/or international levels.

This position will also require service commitments to the university, college, department, and professional organizations; participation in shared governance of the department; the recruitment and mentorship of undergraduate design students; and active participation in the advancement of the Department of Design.

Qualifications/Experience Required:

An earned terminal degree awarded by a regionally accredited or internationally recognized institution in the field specified in the position announcement (exceptions require Academic Affairs approval).

Qualifications/Experience Preferred:

  • M.F.A. in Graphic Design, Illustration, Industrial Design or related field.
  • Minimum of two years university teaching experience.
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching.
  • Demonstrated experience in graphic design, design drawing / illustration.
  • Demonstrated experience in student mentorship.


Ability to teach courses in graphic design, professional practice, letterpress, design foundations and/or illustration, digital and print production, digital design and emerging technology.

Physical Demands:

Repetitive movement of hands and fingers – typing and/or writing. Frequent standing, and/or sitting. Occasional walking, stooping, kneeling or crouching. Reach with hands and arms. Visually identify, observe and assess. Ability to communicate with supervisor/students/colleagues. Regular physical attendance required.
