Executive Summary

RCSI is seeking to appoint a senior leader to the position of Head of the School of Pharmacy.

Appointment of Head of the School of Pharmacy

RCSI now seeks to appoint

  • a leader who is passionate about the education of student pharmacists and who is committed to providing leadership to the profession of pharmacy through transformative education programmes
  • a leader with a research profile of direct relevance to the science and/or practice of pharmacy, that aligns with our institutional translational research priorities
  • a leader who brings expertise and a passion for internationalisation and for collaborative and transnational education provision in established and new markets, including Asia
  • a leader who is dedicated to excellence in the quality of educational programmes, and with an unrelenting focus on quality and quality improvement in all aspects of their role

Person Specification Essential:

The successful candidate will hold a primary qualification in Pharmacy, and be eligible to be a registered pharmacist in his/her home jurisdiction. He/she will hold a doctoral degree (e.g. PhD, EdD). In addition, s/he will demonstrate the following experience and attributes:

  • Highly effective leadership style
  • A minimum of ten years’ experience of undergraduate programme management
  • Significant experience in education, and knowledge of current issues in medical and pharmacy education
  • A distinguished record of international level research, with a clear track-record in research of direct relevance to the science and/or practice of pharmacy, as evidenced by relevant publications in international peer-reviewed literature and prior research grant funding
  • The drive, energy and initiative to promote continuous improvement and change
  • A track record of achieving results with the ability to act decisively and meet milestones
  • Excellent leadership skills, with the ability to:
    • align the activities of the School and its staff with the RCSI vision
    • encourage and support individual and collective development
    • inspire action from others
    • build effective teams
  • Competence in financial management and business planning
  • Excellent communication and collaboration with colleagues at all levels and disciplines
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, and team working skills

Principal Duties and Responsibilities


  • Leading and collaborating on the development and implementation of the School of Pharmacy vision and strategy, aligned with the newly published Faculty Strategy of Transforming Healthcare Education, Research and Service 2018-2022
  • Providing effective leadership to School of Pharmacy staff – inspiring, motivating, coaching and developing our team of high-performing and ambitious staff, throughout their career stages
  • As a board member of Affiliation for Pharmacy Practice Experiential Learning (APPEL; https://www.appel.ie/), providing leadership and direction to APPEL
  • Leading School of Pharmacy involvement in the wider Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences initiative of Transforming Healthcare Education Project (HTEP); including amongst other things the identification and development of new inter-professional education opportunities across the Faculty
  • Contributing to the governance of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences
