The Instructional Designer II position is responsible for assisting faculty with the design, development, and management of online/hybrid courses offered through Ashland University. Uses active learning, learning theories/instructional design models and best practices in online, hybrid and classroom instruction, integrates current educational technologies to promote effective teaching strategies and to improve student learning experiences. This position will also provide consultation and assistance with the technical and programmatic development of assigned projects, designs and develops effective courses, evaluates the effectiveness of course design, and provides assistance with planning and coordinating materials with course faculty and instructors and the development team.
Essential Position Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assists in designing and developing instructional strategies and materials to promote active learning.
- Maintains a high degree of knowledge in existing and emerging learning methods utilizing instructional design theories and innovations in hardware, software, and internet technologies; is able to assess and envision how these methods can be applied to course development efforts.
- Designs, develops, and delivers workshops and training sessions to faculty and professional staff on instructional design topics; assists in the coordination of instructional development project teams, ensuring project deadlines are met.
- Develops documentation and other materials supporting instructional design principles and practices, ensuring that instructional activities link with stated learning objectives and practical applications.
- Manages and organizes project management planning to support the instructional development processes.
- Assists in developing assessment measures to evaluate the instructional effectiveness of various design approaches.
- Performs other work related duties as assigned.
- Master’s degree in education, training and development, or related field from an accredited institution of higher learning and five (5) years of experience (or a combination of education and experience) designing instruction and applying principles of adult learning theories and methodologies to assessment, development, delivery, and evaluation.
- Ph.D. in education, training and development, or related field from an accredited institution of higher learning and curriculum design experience is preferred.
- Prior experience leading project initiatives and mentoring junior members.
- Attention to detail – grammar and punctuation, visual design and layout, audio accuracy, and effective presentation.
- AACSB accreditation is preferred.
- Experience with and the ability to apply Section 508, universal design for learning, and accessibility standards for online learning environments, as well as familiarity with assistive technologies used with online course design, development and delivery.
- Ability to work in and provide support on Mac and Windows platforms is preferred.
- Highly developed communication skills (verbal, written, and interpersonal).
- Quality Matters experience preferred.
- Experience with social networking and collaboration tools (discussion forums, wikis, blogs, Collaborate) in asynchronous learning environments is preferred.
- Proficiency with Adobe CC, MS Office, Google Apps, Camtasia (or other screen capture software).
- Experience with learning technology platforms (Blackboard, Moodle, Canvas, Mediasite, Kaltura).
- Ability to work on multiple projects concurrently and meet hard deadlines.
