The Department of Film & Media at UC Berkeley invites applications for a pool of qualified temporary instructors to teach undergraduate-level courses, should a need arise, in any of the following possible areas:
- Reading and Composition (first- and second-year university writing courses using film and media materials)
- Entertainment Law
- History of Documentary
- General Film History
The number of positions hired from this pool will vary from semester to semester and summer session to summer session, subject to the needs and budget of the department, and in some instances may be zero. When an instructor is hired, the position will most likely be part time, as low as 17% of full time employment during the academic year and 11% during the summer, depending on instructional workload.
This pool will remain open until April 30, 2019 to accommodate upcoming course needs and new When a need arises for a Fall semester, we typically review applications in March; for a Spring semester or Summer term, our review of applications is typically in November, although unexpected vacancies may shorten that timeline.
Semester positions typically start in mid-January for Spring Semester and in mid-August for Fall Semester. There are several staggered summer sessions of varying length, with the earliest start date in mid-to-late May and the latest end date in mid-August. Appointments may be renewable based on the department’s need, funding, and on lecturer performance.
General Duties: In addition to teaching responsibilities, general duties include holding office hours, assigning grades, advising students, preparing course materials (e.g., syllabus), and interacting with students outside of class time via email and campus web-based course resources.
Basic Qualifications (required at time of application):
- Completed MA/MFA (or equivalent degree) in Film and Media (or related field)
Additional Qualifications (required by the employment start date):
- For those who are not US citizens or permanent residents, a legal permit that allows work in the United States (such as a US visa that allows employment) is required by the start date of the position. The department is unable to provide a visa/work permit.
- Experience and demonstrated excellence in teaching at the college level in the U.S.
- If hired to teach R&C, demonstrated experience teaching reading and writing in English.
- If hired to teach a topics course, demonstrated knowledge of the area being taught through teaching experience.
- Ph.D. (or equivalent degree) may be preferred, depending on courses being taught.
Salary: Commensurate with college teaching experience, in accordance with the current Unit-18 lecturer salary scale and its provisions. (The starting 100% full-time annual gross salary rate is currently $53,402.). All positions are located on the UC Berkeley campus.
