Job Description Summary:
The International Services Office (ISO) at the George Washington University facilitates international educational exchange through its services and programs. It serves as the primary administrative, programming, and advising office for the GW international community.

Reporting to the Director of International Services, the Manger of International Services will provide leadership in supporting all functions international and exchange students.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Serves as a Designated School Official (DSO) in relation to compliance with F-1 and F-2 regulations of the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS); Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) in relation to compliance with J-1 and J-2 exchange student regulations of the US Department of State (DOS); The primary school official responsible for compliance with F-1/F-2 and J-1/J-2 student requirements of the DHS Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS)
  • Interprets and provides guidance on federal government policies and procedures that relate to international students, exchange visitor students and their dependents. Makes policy recommendations to the Director on matters affecting international students.
  • Manages and supervises the provision of visa and immigration information, guidance, counseling, and related services to: International students in F-1 status, International student dependents in F-2 status, Exchange students in J-1 status, Exchange student dependents in J-2 status, and The GW faculty and staff who work with international and exchange students.
  • Supervises, manages, mentors, and evaluates International Student Advisors, making recommendations to the Director regarding hires, merit raises, promotions and other personnel matters, including terminations. Plans and conducts regular meetings of (1) International Student Advisors and (2) the International Student Advising Team (i.e., Advisors and support staff). Serves as the student advising representative on the ISO Administration and Management Team. Designs and conducts training sessions for International Student Advisors and other ISO staff who work with international students. Serves as a resource and provides leadership to International Student Advisors on complex and unusual cases.
  • On behalf of the office, manages the coordination, collaboration and cooperation required with all GW schools, colleges, and academic programs for the effective delivery of information, advice and guidance on federal policies governing the academic lives of international students, including minimum course load requirements and exceptions to those requirements, satisfactory academic progress, internships, practicums, leaves of absence, thesis and dissertation research, completion of degree requirements and employment after graduation. Also provides support services to international students so that services can be provided in a culturally appropriate manner and in accordance with federal policies governing the extracurricular lives of international students.
  • Represents the ISO and the international student population on University councils, committees and working groups, as requested, and works on special projects undertaken by these groups. Provides leadership in developing and implementing programs and support services for international and exchange visitor students, and their dependents.
  • Designs, conducts and supervises training sessions, seminars and workshops for international students on: Maintenance of lawful non-immigrant status, On-campus employment, Off-campus employment, Curricular Practical Training (CPT), Academic Training (AT), Pre- and post-completion Optional Practical Training (OPT) and other matters relating to international students and their families.
  • Advises, counsels and assists international and exchange visitor students on: Visa issuance and renewal, Cultural adjustment and other personal matters, Maintenance of lawful non-immigrant status, Federal academic requirements, Employment in the U.S. and other matters regulated by the federal government.
  • Identifies international students most at risk for academic difficulty, including academic suspension and withdrawal. Intervenes with at-risk students by providing advice, assistance, referral and follow-up. When appropriate, confers with faculty members and administrators to ensure academic progress and success. Provides individual and group advising to international students on immigration, academic support services and personal matters.
  • Performs other work-related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 6 years of relevant professional experience. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Degree in a field related to international education and exchange, or to student personnel administration in higher education
  • Experience in international student advising as a DHS-authorized Principal Designated School Official (PDSO) or Designated School Official (DSO)
  • Experience in exchange student advising as a DOS-authorized Responsible Officer (RO) or Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO)
  • Working experience with Sunapsis, fsaATLAS or other batch processing systems used by US universities to comply with the DHS Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS)
  • Working knowledge of and experience with the Banner student data system
  • Experience developing and/or managing international student advising, support services and programming
  • Excellent communication skills appropriate for a multicultural environment in which most students’ first language is not English
  • International travel, study and/or work experiences
