Mannes School of Music at The New School invites applications for Associate Professor of Opera Studies on a Renewable Term. The Professor of Opera Studies will also serve as the Managing Artistic Director of the Mannes Opera and will play a leadership role in the continued development of the Mannes Opera and opera and vocal studies at Mannes, as well as help support the development of musical theater at the College of Performing Arts (CoPA). The Managing Artistic Director is a key member of the faculty relating to all academic and artistic areas of opera at Mannes, including curriculum development, stage direction, teaching, and management of the Mannes Opera.

The successful candidate for the position of Managing Artistic Director will demonstrate significant experience in stage direction and stage techniques at the professional and university levels. She or he will have a documented track record of artistic and pedagogical excellence and progressive growth throughout their career.

Duties include:

  • Produce two major productions, one chamber opera, and scene programs each year. The successful candidate will direct some but not all of these productions.
  • Select and recruit guest directors and music directors for productions.
  • Teach a variety of coursework (in both classroom and production settings) to a diverse group of undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Contribute to the continued development of curriculum for opera that is relevant to artists emerging into the rapidly changing landscape of vocal performance in the 21st century.
  • Develop new partnerships and build on existing ones, to ensure that Mannes vocalists have access to the widest possible range of professional and pre-professional opportunities.
  • Take an active role in recruitment in the area of vocal performance at Mannes and the College of Performing Arts.
  • Collaborate effectively with a wide range of colleagues, including those in the dean’s office, the CoPA production department, and the emerging musical theater program at CoPA.

Minimum Qualifications:
While no single candidate will possess all of the following, the ideal candidate will have:

  • M.M., M.F.A, or comparable professional experience
  • An established or emerging international recognition as an opera director
  • A minimum of three years of experience teaching in higher education
  • A broad based understanding of opera, including stage and music direction techniques, repertory, working knowledge of the operatic languages, stage deportment, acting techniques for the stage, and related areas
  • A track-record of directing in both traditional and non-traditional settings
  • An appetite for experimental repertoire
  • Experience with and knowledge of musical theater
  • Ability to recruit high-level vocalists for vocal programs at the College of Performing Arts
  • Proven excellence as a stage director in professional and academic settings
  • Proven excellence as an educator in the classroom and on the stage
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative environment
  • Administrative experience in an academic or arts institution
  • Success and interest in fundraising
  • A high value for collaboration and partnership
