The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics at the University of Virginia is seeking an experimental biologist research associate in the laboratory of Francine Garrett-Bakelman, M.D., Ph.D., to study epigenetic mechanisms of disease in cancer. The expected start date is April 17, 2017 (start date is flexible).
The focus of the Garrett-Bakelman Lab is to understand how epigenetic mechanisms contribute to disease pathogenesis in Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). Research in the lab utilizes human patient samples in addition to using murine models and tumor cell lines to perform a variety of functional and genome scale technologies. These include but are not limited to cell-based assays, DNA cytosine modification assays, RNA-sequencing and chromatin function assays to address fundamental questions about cancer biology and transcriptional regulation (e.g. PMID: 27322744). Projects will be conducted in collaboration with computational biologists and include the identification of epigenetically regulated factors that contribute to the establishment and progression of AML, and characterization of candidate genes using in vitro, ex vivo, and in vivo systems.
Qualified applicants must have a PhD in a life science field and/or an MD degree. A strong background in molecular and cellular biology and biochemistry, and publications in peer-reviewed journals, are also required. Experience with hematopoiesis/leukemia models and/or primary human patient samples, and a background in next generation sequencing techniques and/or transcriptional regulation, is desirable, but not necessary.
