Department Overview
UNT competes as a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and C-USA. North Texas’ athletic programs are classified as NCAA Division I, the largest and highest division among all colleges and universities. The 46,000 square-foot Athletic Center located off South Bonnie Brae Street is the centerpiece of North Texas athletics. Athletics strives to conduct a competitive athletics program that promotes faculty, staff, student and community affiliation and participation with North Texas Athletics. Also, to provide facilities which attract the highest level of talent and allow student athletes to perform at the highest level in practice and in competition.

Job Description
This position is responsible for overseeing the Mean Green Student Services Center which includes academic support programs, staff, student services, and student-athlete development. This position will provide leadership in developing sound policies and executing processes for the academic support of all Mean Green student-athletes. Direction will also be provided in assisting with student-athlete mental/emotional wellness, as well as leadership and life skills development programs.

Representative Tasks

  • Oversee all daily operations and strategic plans for the athletic department Student Service Center.
  • Create strategies to maximize APR outcomes and academic performance measures; advise and implement APR education for coaches, staff, and student-athletes.
  • Ensure efficient processes are in place to meet student-athlete academic needs, study hall schedules, and tutoring, while developing policies to ensure highest levels of academic success.
  • Coordinate and maintain relationships with campus partners and resources to ensure student-athlete academic needs and academic goals are being met.
  • Counsel and ensure the academic success and progress of student-athletes. Responsible for all student service related activities for the general well-being of all student-athletes.
  • Responsible for updating and distributing annual Student-Athlete Handbook; developing and managing internal processes outlined in the handbook.
  • Oversee and assist with student-athlete leadership and life skills curriculum and programming, to include annual mandatory student-athlete orientation class for all incoming freshmen and transfers, monthly career programming, development of leadership certificate course requirements, other relevant programming to ensure adequate preparation for life after sports for all student-athletes.
  • Provide annual reporting of outcomes for North Texas Athletics Annual Report: including, but not limited to annual graduation rate data, semester to semester student-athlete GPA data, NCAA APR data, tracking of talent admits and their on-going academic performance, and any other items identified by the Executive Leadership team.
  • Serves as a member of the Athletic Council and oversees the SAAC (Student-athlete Advisory Council).
  • Troubleshoots NCAA Clearinghouse issues and other academic preparation or remediation plans for student-athletes.
  • Assists with the student-athlete scholarship program and managing special sessions and enrollment activities.
  • Assists with compliance-related activities as needed throughout the year, including certification, annual progress towards degree verification, APR/APP data collection and entry, etc.
  • Oversight of specific sport(s) as well as assigning of sports to advisors who will assist with academic planning, programming, and scheduling.
  • Oversight of graduation receptions, faculty/staff spotlight recognitions at Mean Green sporting events, student-athlete awards banquet – The Scrappy’s, and other events as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
The successful candidate will possess a Bachelor’s Degree in in related field and five years of related experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience. The following knowledge, skills, and abilities are required:

  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of NCAA rules and regulations.
  • Extensive knowledge of Texas rules and regulations related to functional area (or ability to rapidly assimilate).
  • Strong planning and project management skills.
  • Ability to direct and manage the work of others.

Preferred Qualifications
The preferred candidate will possess the following additional qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of NCAA rules and regulations.
  • Strong planning and project management skills.
  • Ability to direct and manage the work of others.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing an academic unit in Division I.
