Position Overview

About the role:

Tāwharau Ora - The School of Veterinary Science (SoVS) at Massey University in Palmerston North, NZ, invites applications for a Chair in Equine Health, Welfare and Performance at the rank of Professor. This position is sponsored by the New Zealand Equine Trust.

Primary responsibilities of the position include:

  • Maintaining an equine research portfolio of international standing in areas of equine science that prioritise the health, welfare and performance of horses.

  • Forging national and international research collaborations, and strong industry linkages and collaborations with the horse racing and the sports horse industries and the veterinary profession, in order to promote Massey as a pre-eminent provider of equine research in the southern hemisphere.

  • Providing leadership in making New Zealand a centre of excellence for equine welfare in racing as well as other equestrian sports; and

  • Leading, mentoring, supervising and supporting colleagues and students within the discipline area in the School and wider University.


The successful candidate will be expected to build or bring their own research programme and will join an active research school that includes world-class expertise in equine performance, epidemiology, pathology, molecular bioscience and animal welfare science. The School of Veterinary Science has the established infrastructure and facilities to support collaborative and independent research, including a full-time staff of clinical veterinarians and technicians, access to an equine teaching herd, a pathology suite, imaging services and extensive laboratory facilities.

About the School:

The School of Veterinary Science was established in 1963 and is New Zealand €™s only provider of veterinary education. We operate a 5-year, 10-semester, undergraduate Bachelor €™s degree (BVSc) programme, with annual cohorts of around 175 students. Our BVSc programme is internationally accredited (AVBC, AVMA CoE and RCVS) and we are currently rolling out a brand-new competency-based curriculum (from intake year 2023). The School consistently ranks in the top 30 in the world (QS Rankings by Subject); in the 2024 rankings, we were the highest ranked Veterinary School in the Southern Hemisphere (21st overall, 3rd based on employer reputation).

SoVS is located at Palmerston North on the ManawatÅ« campus of Massey University. Palmerston North ( €œPalmy € to the locals) is a city of around 120,000 residents, situated 2 hours north of the capital city, Wellington. Based in the heart of central New Zealand, it is an easy weekend drive to recreational areas including surf beaches, national walking tracks and ski fields. The city itself is busy and lively, with a large number of parks and an established café culture.

Qualifications:

A veterinary degree which can be immediately registered with the Veterinary Council of New Zealand or a PhD in an area of equine health, welfare, or performance is essential.

Anticipated Employment Package:

Salary will be commensurate with experience. The employment package will include financial support for the key activities of the Chair, for example, postdoctoral support, postgraduate scholarship funding or research seed funding.
