Job Description

The homeland security and emergency services sector represents the nation’s broad capabilities and defense in the prevention and mitigation of risk from intentional threats, and natural and human-caused disasters and emergencies. The primary mission of the emergency services sector is to save lives, prevent violent attacks, protect property, assist communities impacted by disasters, and aid in recovery from emergencies.

The Emergency Services Department at Idaho State University is seeking an outstanding faculty member to join the Homeland Security and Emergency Management program. To find the best fit for the program, this position is an open track (Clinical or Tenure track) at the Assistant Professor rank. The HSEM faculty’s primary responsibilities are to develop and teach master-level coursework, recruit, and mentor students in the career field, develop HSEM-related research and apply it in their courses, and involve themselves and students in their research and service projects. The anticipated start date for the successful candidate will be August 2023.

Key responsibilities for Clinical Track:

  • Teach online, asynchronous disciplinary courses within the Homeland Security and Emergency Management (HSEM) degree programs consistent with rank
  • Participate in creative and scholarly activities, including student mentoring of thesis and capstone projects
  • Develop online asynchronous courses and curricula depending on interest and experience
  • Faculty members conduct research and service initiatives related to homeland security and emergency management missions and education
  • Provide service to the department, university, and profession
  • Faculty members conduct research and service initiatives related to homeland security and emergency management missions and education
  • Faculty members keep apprised of new developments, research, and practices in HSEM fields and apply knowledge to course curriculum and delivery
  • Supports the strategic development and implementation of the HSEM academic programs

Key responsibilities for Tenure Track:

  • Teach online, asynchronous disciplinary courses within the Homeland Security and Emergency Management (HSEM) degree programs consistent with rank
  • Develop a viable line of research that includes extramural funding
  • Supervision of undergraduate and/or graduate students conducting research
  • Direct and mentor student research efforts including capstone projects
  • Develop online asynchronous courses and curriculum depending on interest and experience
  • Provide service to the department, university, and profession

Reports to: Program Director, HSEM

Minimum Qualifications

Clinical Track:

  • Earned master’s degree (e.g., MS, MA) and/or doctoral degree in a related field (e.g., EdD, PhD)
  • Minimum of three (3) years (post-graduation) experience teaching or training in a related field
  • Minimum of five (5) years of related professional experience
  • Capacity and commitment to contribute to teaching/project supervision and contribute to service roles within the College of Health and the University
  • Excellent interpersonal and professional skills for excellence in instruction
  • Evidence of strong collaboration and interpersonal skills
  • Experience and interest in pursuing collaborative research projects

Tenure Track:

  • Earned PhD, EdD, or another terminal degree in a related discipline
  • Candidates near completion of the doctorate may be considered, but completion of the degree will be required to maintain employment
  • Minimum of three (3) years (post-graduation) experience teaching or training in a related field
  • Minimum of five (5) years of related professional experience
  • Capacity and commitment to contribute to teaching/project supervision and contribute to service roles within the College of Health and the University
  • Excellent interpersonal and professional skills for excellence in instruction
  • Evidence of strong collaboration and interpersonal skills
  • Experience and interest in pursuing collaborative research projects

Preferred Qualifications

Clinical Track:

  • Experience teaching at the university level
  • Experience supervising and instructing students in the homeland security and emergency management enterprise
  • Demonstrated success in the online, asynchronous classroom, teaching, and research/scholarly activities

Tenure Track:

  • More than three (3) years of teaching experience (e.g., full-time or adjunct) at the university level
  • Experience supervising and instructing graduate students in the homeland security and emergency management enterprise
  • Demonstrated success in the online, asynchronous classroom, teaching, and research/scholarly activities
  • Demonstrated success in grant writing and research (a variety of specialty areas will be considered)
