Job Description
The School of Music at Ohio University is one of the six schools within the College of Fine Arts. The School of Music plays a significant role in the vibrant cultural life of Ohio University as well as Southeast Ohio. School of Music students, faculty, and guest artists present over 200 concerts and recitals each year. A distinguished faculty of 37 full time and 8 part time professors serves a student body of approximately 300 undergraduate and 75 masters students. Degree programs include composition, conducting, CMDI, music education, music history and literature, music performance, music theory, music therapy, and pedagogy. School of Music alumni hold prominent teaching and professional positions throughout the United States and abroad. The School of Music is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music since 1946 and is committed to continuing its tradition of excellence.
Established in 1804, Ohio University’s is the oldest public university in the state of Ohio. Our total enrollment is over 28,000 students across the state and online. About 20,000 of those students are undergraduates studying at our residential campus in Athens-our quintessential college town that’s nestled deep in the Appalachian foothills of beautiful Southeast Ohio. Full-time instructional position in voice specializing in performing and teaching diverse vocal styles utilized in non-classical genres such as musical theater, contemporary commercial, jazz, rock, and other global non-Western vocal styles. Advanced training in science-informed voice pedagogy (classical and non-classical) and foreign language diction for classical singing are required, as is knowledge and experience in music business, industry and entrepreneurship. Effective participation in voice student recruitment and retention, leadership in curricular and program development, and service on departmental, college and university committees is required. Potential for developing and sustaining regional and national recognition of teaching is a requirement, as is potential for collaborating in interdisciplinary initiatives. Other duties depend upon departmental needs. This position is created through the INVITE (Innovative Inclusive Teaching Excellence) Instructional Faculty Hiring Program at Ohio University. Faculty hired in the INVITE cohort will receive a course release each semester to serve as Faculty Fellows in the Center for Teaching, Learning, and Assessment, and will act as a resource for other faculty to support inclusive and innovative pedagogy in critical courses that have a high impact on student retention and success in their discipline. Faculty will be expected to primarily teach in-person on Ohio University’s main campus in Athens, OH. Instructional faculty in the College of Fine Arts typically have the equivalent of a 4-4 teaching load per year (not including course releases described below). Salaries for the appointment will be competitive based on the candidate’s credentials.
This position is eligible for initial five-year appointment renewed annually based upon faculty member’s performance evaluations, interest of the faculty member, and continued need of the department. This position is also eligible for additional multi-year appointments after the first five years.
Minimum Qualifications
Master’s degree
Advanced training in science-informed voice pedagogy
Education and experience in music business and/or music history
Preferred Qualifications
1. Specialized advanced training, certificate or degree in voice performance, singing health specialization, science-informed voice pedagogy, speech language pathology or vocology.
2. Five or more years of experience in performing and teaching non-Western vocal styles.
3. Experience in constructing curricular standards for non-Western vocal styles as requirements within degree programs.
4. Documented administrative, performance and/or teaching experience with commercial music, musical theater, jazz, and/or other non-Western vocal styles.
5. Acquaintance with media and technology supporting non-Western vocal style production.
