The Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy at the University of Virginia seeks a distinguished scholar to fill an endowed chair position in leadership at the rank of Tenured Full Professor with a target start date of Fall 2022.

The Batten Family Bicentennial Distinguished Leadership Professorship was established to enable the Batten School to raise its national and global profile among the top rank of leadership and public policy institutions. The successful candidate will embody the ideals and vision of Frank Batten, Sr. whose commitment to leadership and public service is reflected in the core values and vision of the School: to develop leaders prepared to lead in a diverse and divided world and to generate new knowledge to solve the world’s pressing policy challenges.

The Batten Family Bicentennial Distinguished Leadership Professor will: lead a nationally and internationally recognized research program; mentor faculty and students; teach courses on leadership and public policy at the undergraduate and graduate levels; build relationships within Batten and across UVA; and engage with the community at the local, state, national, or global level. The Batten Family Professor will join as the School moves forward on a sustained path of growth, innovation, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

The successful candidate will have a sustained career of highly influential scholarship and a record of outstanding teaching. The successful candidate will demonstrate interest and ability in co-creating the future of the Batten School and in engaging with the practice of leadership and public policy. The successful candidate will be committed to collaboration, interdisciplinarity, and promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion.

We invite applications from candidates who have earned a doctorate in a relevant discipline. We are open to scholars focused on substantive areas with clear implications for the practice of leadership or public policy, including but not limited to: decision making; diversity and inclusion; ethics, morality, and justice; groups and teams; moral and political identity; motivation and goal pursuit; negotiation and conflict resolution; nudges and interventions; prejudice and discrimination; social identity; social influence; well-being and happiness. Preference will be given to candidates who aim to conduct research that makes both theoretical and practical contributions in their area of interest.

While the primary appointment is in the Batten School, a joint/courtesy appointment could be possible in one of the other schools of the university depending on the candidate’s interests and qualifications.

The University of Virginia’s Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy was founded with a 100-million-dollar gift from the late Frank Batten Sr. and a charge to prepare enlightened and ethical leaders. The Batten School opened its doors in 2007 to a small cohort of graduate students. Today the school offers a Masters of Public Policy alongside its Bachelor of Arts program, several dual-degree offerings, and an emerging executive education program.

The Frank Batten School combines the scholarly excellence of an elite research university with the pedagogical and external engagement focus of a top professional school. Thomas Jefferson founded the University of Virginia in 1819. He wished the publicly-supported school to have a national character and stature. Jefferson envisioned a new kind of university, one dedicated to educating leaders in practical affairs and public service rather than for professions in the classroom and pulpit exclusively. It was the first nonsectarian university in the United States and the first to use the elective course system.
