Samford University’s Howard College of Arts and Sciences invites individuals interested in serving in a Christian university environment to apply for the position of chair of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at the full professor rank beginning August 2020. This full-time tenure-track faculty position is a 9-month appointment and carries a 2-2 teaching load (4 credit hour courses).
Qualified candidates will hold either a Ph.D. in mathematics or a Ph.D. in a related field paired with sufficient graduate level mathematics credits to allow the candidate to teach across the mathematics curriculum. Additional graduate coursework in computer science is of interest but not required. Candidates should possess substantial university administrative experience. A commitment to academic excellence and the ability to work effectively with faculty, students and colleagues is required.
Chair responsibilities include scheduling courses, managing curriculum assessment, evaluating faculty, overseeing the departmental budget, and providing vision for the program. These tasks as chair are in addition to the expectations of all mathematics faculty: teaching courses from across the entire undergraduate mathematics curriculum, advising students, and providing departmental, college, university, and professional service.
Additionally, the chair will lead the department in an ongoing effort to ensure that the departmental programs prepare students for the variety of opportunities available to graduates of mathematics and computer science. These opportunities include, but are not limited to, further study and careers in education, research, statistics, data science, actuarial science, cryptography and cryptanalysis, mathematical biology, economics, finance, computer science, bioinformatics, physics, and engineering.
Candidates must possess a teaching, research and academic record commensurate with full professor rank in Samford University’s Department of Mathematics and Computer Science. Compensation is commensurate with experience.
The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science has 11 full-time faculty members including a Director of Computer Science. The department currently has over 70 students as majors split between mathematics and computer science.
