Job Summary

Assists with student success with the goal of promoting behavioral health and aiding in the personal growth of medical students and residents. Responsible to the Director of Academic Support and Counseling Services, the mental health counselor identifies the needs of students and develops appropriate therapy goals and objectives for the implementation of an individual therapy plan. Provides diverse clinical interventions tailored to the unique needs of the individual student, resident, or family member. Presents on mental health-related issues, such as wellness, self-care, stress and time management, and suicide prevention) to student and faculty groups.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain a positive rapport with students/clients
  • Ability to assess, diagnose and provide a variety of effective therapeutic interventions for common mental health issues
  • Ability to conduct outreach on diverse mental-health-related topics
  • Ability to develop reports as to the number of patients seen and various diagnoses and services required while maintaining confidentiality/ HIPAA guidelines.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse student population, with an understanding of the potential needs of minority and/or disadvantaged populations.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Business-related computer skills.
  • Ability to function under general supervision, determine best methods to accomplish assignments, and supervise administrative employees.
  • Must have flexible hours in order to accommodate the schedules of medical students and residents.

Required Qualifications

  • Licensed by the state to independently practice mental health counseling at the master’s degree level.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the medical education structure and unique mental health obstacles faced by students and residents.
