Job Description:

Position Summary:

The Department of Physical Therapy at Utica University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-eligible Assistant Professor faculty position in the on-campus, entry-level Doctor of Physical Therapy Program. This is a 10-month appointment with an opportunity to expand responsibility for a leadership role as Department Chair. The target start date is August 1, 2026

Responsibilities:

  • The candidate will primarily teach ground courses in the neuromuscular system curriculum. Courses are currently taught during the traditional fall and spring semesters.
  • Based on departmental needs, the successful candidate may also teach in other content areas, including geriatrics, pediatrics, other systems (e.g., integumentary, genitourinary, etc.), and/or research. Additional teaching opportunities are available based on the candidate’s areas of interest.
  • The candidate will conduct research and service appropriate for the program expectations and successful tenure review.
  • As a DPT Program faculty member, the candidate will participate in advising undergraduate and graduate students, as well as providing professional mentoring

Requirements:

Education and Experience:

  • Terminal academic doctoral degree such as a PhD, EdD, DSc, or equivalent. ABD candidates may be considered for this position
  • Candidates with prior higher education teaching experience and two years of relevant clinical experience, preferred

Required License/Certification and Qualifications:

  • The candidate must have a current unrestricted license or eligibility for PT licensure in New York State.

Skills/Abilities:

  • Contemporary expertise in neuromuscular physical therapy or ABPTS Certification
  • A commitment to innovation and student-centered learning
  • Evidence of an ongoing or developing scholarly agenda
  • Ability to engage in service activities in the department, at the University, and in the surrounding community
  • Ability to function well within a collegial, collaborative work environment.

About the Department

Established in 1993, the Department of Physical Therapy is part of Utica University’s School of Health Professions and Education, which also includes programs in occupational therapy, nursing, health sciences, social work, Child Life and Family Science, educator preparation, and the newly launched Physical Education, Exercise Science, and Wellness program. The School fosters interprofessional education, research, and service opportunities both locally and nationally.

The department enrolls a cohort of 36 DPT students annually and is supported by a core of talented, collaborative faculty members, many of whom have over a decade of experience and service in leadership roles at the state and national levels of the APTA. Facilities include a renovated clinical lab, anatomy and neuroscience labs, the Utica University Sports Dome (one of the largest indoor multi-sport facilities in North America), and access to the Nexus Center.

Students benefit from integrated clinical experiences, wellness programming for older adults, and partnerships with local healthcare systems, including the new Wynn Hospital, opened in 2023.
