Job description

The University of The Bahamas is seeking a dynamic faculty member with specialization in Writing, Rhetoric and Composition for the position of Assistant/Associate Professor, in the College of Liberal and Fine Arts. This full-time appointment will begin Fall 2026.

Reporting to the Chair, School of Communication and Creative Arts, the Assistant/Associate Professor, Writing, Rhetoric and Composition will:

  • Create writing courses and curricula to serve students who speak varieties of English along the Bahamian creole continuum;
  • Teach a 4/4 load of writing classes in traditional and web-based formats;
  • Teach courses in Rhetoric and Composition and affiliated subjects while contributing to curriculum design and revision;
  • Conduct original research in Rhetoric and Composition, sharing findings through peer-reviewed publications and presentations at academic conferences;
  • Participate in departmental meetings and faculty committees;
  • Organize and support academic events, including seminars, workshops and conferences;
  • Advise and mentor students in their academic development and research activities;
  • Engage in ongoing scholarly activity and professional development, and contribute to community outreach efforts;
  • Participate in examination committees and advisory panels, supporting departmental governance;
  • Exhibit commitment to undergraduate teaching, teaching excellence, and an active research agenda in Rhetoric and Composition.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Strong commitment to undergraduate instruction;
  • Skilled in any of the following: WAC/WID, digital rhetorics, professional, technical or basic writing;
  • Knowledgeable of current trends in writing pedagogy, first-year writing and the use of AI in writing;
  • Able to engage in research informed by unique cultural contexts of The Bahamas.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Applicants must possess a PhD in Rhetoric and Composition, English or a related area from an accredited institution;
  • Evidence of research in Rhetoric and Composition or English;
  • Evidence of excellence in teaching;
  • Evidence of innovative scholarship.

Setting: The University of The Bahamas (UB) is a vital catalyst for national development. Chartered on 10th November 2016, UB had its genesis in The College of The Bahamas which was established in 1974. Since 1995, the institution’s academic offerings have expanded through the introduction of baccalaureate degree programmes offered across a broad range of approximately 60 majors.
