Plymouth State University invites applications for an Assistant/Associate Professor of Practice position that will support the Bachelor of Science degree in Sports Management. Sports Management is a degree offered jointly by the School of Business and the School of Health at Plymouth State University. The qualified candidate will report directly to the School of Health. collaboration with other faculty, and community engagement. Primary responsibilities include teaching a variety of undergraduate sports management courses, overseeing practicum and internships experiences, and contribution to strategic planning and program development. The candidate will be expected to advise undergraduate students. The Assistant/Associate Professor of Practice Faculty positions are full time, 9-month, with benefits, and a teaching load is 30-32 credits per year.
Duties/ResponsibilitiesTeaching (85%)
Teaching undergraduates within the School of Health and the School of Business
- Teaching Sports Management courses located in the School of Health and/or the School of Business “core courses” and/or teaching selected coaching courses, depending on the candidate’s expertise.
- Teaching the following courses in the major: Introduction to Sports Management, Sports Facility and Event Management, as well as coordination of Sports Management majors practical experiences (Practicum and Internship).
- Other possible undergraduate courses in sports management include Administration of Athletics, Sports Governance, Sports Law, Sports Marketing and Sales, and Financial Management in Sports.
- Possible Coaching courses may include Coaching Effectiveness, Applied Sports Coaching, and Sport in Society.
- Possible entry level “Business Core” courses, depending on candidate experience
- Mentor and advise students to support academic and professional success.
- Supervise fieldwork, practicum, and internship experiences.
- Develop and maintain strong partnerships internally and externally within the sport industry to enhance student learning, and practical experience opportunities.
- Service to the School of Health and to the University
Service to the University (15%)
- Full time Assistant Professor of Practice faculty are required to provide service to the University through participation in activities that contribute to faculty governance such as program coordination, major policy committee participation, community engagement activities, and admissions initiatives.
Requirements
Minimum Acceptable Education & Experience:
- Earned Master’s in Sports Management, Athletic Administration, or Business Administration [with a sports focus or an undergraduate sports-related degree] or closely related field is required.
- Evidence of quality teaching and mentorship
- Proven leadership experience in the sports industry
- Excellent communications skills, written and verbal
- Established connections with sports industry professionals
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Knowledge of current practices and issues within the sports industry, including governance, event and facility management, marketing, and financial operations.
- Ability to teach effectively at the university level across lecture and experiential formats, including supervision of internships and practicum experiences.
- Strong mentoring, advising, and student development skills.
- Ability to build and sustain partnerships with sport industry organizations to support experiential learning.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills and ability to collaborate across academic units.
- Strong organizational skills and capacity to manage teaching, advising, internship oversight, and service responsibilities.
- Commitment to inclusive practices and student-centered learning.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Earned doctoral degree or ABD in Sports Management or related field of study
- Ability to teach a wide variety of Sports Management courses
- Experience developing and supervising internships or field experiences
- Three to five years of relevant experience as a professional in the sports industry
- Strong professional connections in the industry
- Interest in high impact learning in an undergraduate setting
- Enthusiasm for interprofessional education and collaboration
Compensation Pay Range:
$55,000-$70,000
The rank of the selected candidate will depend upon the candidate’s qualifications.
