The Search
Temple University, a vibrant, urban public very high research (R1) and top opportunity institution in the heart of Philadelphia, seeks a dynamic, entrepreneurial leader to serve as the inaugural Vice Provost for Online & Digital Learning (VPODL) and Executive Director of Temple Online. This university-wide role will lead the development, growth, and stewardship of Temple’s online and digitally enabled academic portfolio at a pivotal moment of institutional transformation.
The VPODL will be responsible for establishing and scaling Temple Online as a coordinated, university-wide enterprise, serving as the central engine for online enrollment growth, program expansion, and digital innovation. This includes defining the strategy, infrastructure, and operating model for Temple Online, and translating that strategy into measurable outcomes through end-to-end program lifecycle execution, from market validation through launch, scale, and ongoing optimization. The VPODL will be directly accountable for achieving enrollment growth and revenue targets for Temple Online and will oversee the financial model and operating budget to ensure sustainable growth and strong unit economics. This role requires both strategic leadership and hands-on execution in a rapidly evolving environment. The VPODL will inherit select existing capabilities while building and scaling additional functions, particularly in marketing and student success.
Reporting to the Provost, the VPODL will work closely with deans, faculty, and academic leaders to ensure that online and digital learning initiatives are fully integrated with Temple’s academic mission and strategic priorities. This role requires a collaborative, service-oriented approach, along with the ability to lead institutional change, build strong partnerships across the university, and provide clear leadership, prioritization, and accountability for outcomes.
Success in this role will be defined by the ability of the VPODL to translate strategy into sustained, measurable impact. Key indicators of success will include:
- Demonstrated growth in online enrollment across a portfolio of high-quality, market-aligned programs
- Establishment of a scalable, high-performing operating model for Temple Online, including effective shared services across marketing, enrollment, instructional design, and student support
- Strong performance and accountability of external partners, including effective contract management and alignment to defined performance metrics
- Evidence of improved student outcomes, including retention, progression, and satisfaction in online programs
- Successful collaboration with deans and faculty, reflected in broad institutional engagement and adoption of online initiatives
- Ability to launch and scale multiple programs in parallel within defined timelines
