Job description
The Fine Arts Department of Hampden–Sydney College invites applications for a one-year full- or part-time Choral Director for the academic year 2026-27. The appointment will be either at the Visiting Assistant Professor level (full-time) or Lecturer (part-time) level, depending on the preference of the candidate. The position begins July 1, with responsibilities starting August 14. Applicants must have a Master’s and/or Doctorate in Music.
This is a one-year replacement position for the Director of the Hampden-Sydney College Chorus, a tenor-bass ensemble. The Chorus is a regular curricular offering as part of the Music program, and they typically perform one concert per semester. Candidates hired as Visiting Assistant Professor will also teach five courses during the academic year, in addition to Chorus. These may include courses in music appreciation or history, music theory fundamentals, and group piano. Music appreciation or history courses might include general music appreciation, classical music, global music, jazz, or popular music. Candidates might also offer a topical course or practicum at their discretion. Candidates interested in only directing the Chorus, or teaching fewer 5 additional courses, are encouraged to apply, since courses may be divided among separate individuals as necessary.
How to apply
Applicants should submit the following via Interfolio:
- Letter of interest specifying which position(s) the candidate would prefer (applicants may be open to both) and addressing the applicant’s qualifications for the position. Applicants interested in teaching courses in addition to Chorus should also specify what courses they are interested or willing to teach, and they should describe what these courses might look like.
