POSITION DETAILS

The Dean of Students serves as the College’s primary advocate for students and provides strategic leadership for programs, services, and initiatives that promote student success, well-being, retention, belonging, engagement, and a strong culture of care. Reporting to the Vice President for Student Affairs, the Dean fosters a student-centered culture by leading comprehensive support efforts, coordinating institutional responses to students in distress, overseeing student conduct and behavioral intervention processes, and strengthening collaboration across academic and administrative units.

The Dean of Students leads the development, implementation, assessment, and continuous improvement of programs and services that support students’ academic, personal, social, and emotional development within a holistic culture of care. This role serves as a key resource for students, faculty, staff, families, and community partners, and contributes to institutional planning, policy development, and student success initiatives.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Strategic Leadership & Advocacy: Serve as the chief advocate for students, leading the development and assessment of student support programs, shaping policies, and advising senior leadership on student trends and strategic priorities.
  • Student Support & Crisis Response: Oversee case management services and coordinate campus-wide responses for students of concern, including chairing key committees and collaborating with campus and external partners on crisis situations.
  • Student Conduct Administration: Direct all aspects of student conduct processes, ensuring compliance with policies, overseeing investigations and hearings, and promoting restorative, educational approaches to accountability.
  • Student Success & Engagement: Partner across Academic and Student Affairs to advance retention and graduation, using data-informed strategies to support engagement, wellness, and removal of barriers to student achievement.
  • Operations, Supervision & Collaboration: Lead and supervise key student-facing units, manage budgets and compliance, and foster campus and community partnerships to strengthen student support systems.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

This position is in CUNY’s Executive Compensation Plan. All executive positions require a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree and eight years’ related experience. Additional qualifications are defined below by the College.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, Counseling, Social Work, Public Administration, or related field (doctorate preferred).
  • Ten (10) years of progressively responsible experience in higher education administration, student affairs, student services, counseling, student conduct, case management, or a related field, including substantial supervisory and leadership experience, with a proven record of managing initiatives that support student success.
  • Minimum of 2–3 years of experience working in a large urban public university system.
  • Knowledge of student development, crisis intervention, threat assessment, conflict resolution, and restorative practices.
  • Experience using data and assessment to improve student outcomes.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and student-centered practice.

$156,000 – $172,000
