Job Description
The ETSU College of Nursing invites applications for a full-time innovative and dedicated nursing educator and scientist with a strong commitment to teaching, scholarship, and service. This is a 12-month, tenured/tenure-track nursing faculty position.
Successful candidates will be expected to contribute to the research mission of the College of Nursing. The new faculty will join a dynamic group of nursing educators and scientists with a strong commitment to student success through innovative evidence-based teaching strategies, inter-professional collaboration, and fostering an environment where every student feels valued and supported.
This position requires teaching, research and service duties to be conducted in person on campus. Remote or hybrid work options are not available.
Rank is determined at the time of hiring. Candidates considered for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor must possess a terminal research doctorate in nursing or related field by the start date and demonstrate the potential for research productivity. If the research doctorate is in a field other than nursing, the candidate must hold a master’s degree in nursing. Some appointments may be eligible for tenure. Faculty rank and track commensurate with education and experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of computer/audiovisual software and technology, including learning management systems and supplemental instructional platforms.
- Knowledge of evidence-based nursing education practices.
- Knowledge of nursing accreditation standards.
- Knowledge of current healthcare practices including current technologies.
- Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with a wide range of faculty, staff, students, and clinical partners.
- Ability to effectively engage and motivate students.
- Ability to work collaboratively with administration, faculty, staff, and clinical partners.
- Ability to engage in clinical teaching as per workload assignment.
- Ability to travel to clinical agencies based on workload assignment.
- Ability to travel to other campus sites for teaching as per workload negotiation.
- All applicants must demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively in written and spoken English in accordance with the Tennessee Board of Regents policy 5:02:01:03.
Required Qualifications
- Earned PhD in Nursing or a closely related field, or EdD with a strong emphasis on research, evaluation, and scholarship.
- Demonstrated preparation in independent research methodology, including quantitative, qualitative, or mixed methods.
- Evidence of a developing or established program of research.
- Potential for or demonstrated success in securing extramural funding.
- Record of scholarly dissemination (e.g., peer-reviewed publications, presentations.)
Preferred Qualifications
- Greater than or equal to five (5) years of experience in higher education.
Physical Demands
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by the employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job across various settings in the classroom, simulation, clinical, and/or community as required and/or needed. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be engaged in physical activities that involve prolonged standing, walking, bending, stooping, pulling/pushing, and assisting students in clinical, laboratory, and simulation environments. The employee must occasionally lift and carry clinical teaching materials and equipment (i.e. lift, carry, push, and pull) up to 100 pounds or more. The employee must be able to perceive and respond to sounds and alarms; communicate effectively with others; be able to observe and monitor situations and details at close range in full and dimmed light. The employee will provide clinical instruction in healthcare settings of up to 2-3 clinical courses per semester, with each clinical lasting up to twelve hours per day. Rapid mobility may also be required on occasion. The employee must be able to demonstrate and model clinical procedures and techniques, which may require physical dexterity and stamina.
Stress levels may be high due to frequently dealing with numerous students, patients, family members, and other healthcare providers. This position demands concentration and the ability to work in emotionally charged situations.

College of Nursing Overview
The College of Nursing is part of the University’s Academic Health Sciences Center, which also includes the James H. Quillen College of Medicine, the Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy, the College of Public Health, and the College of Health Sciences. The College of Nursing is the largest in the State of Tennessee offering multiple tracks for students enrolled in undergraduate and graduate programs. The Department of Undergraduate Programs is home to over 45 full-time faculty and 700 students across five (5) tracks including the Traditional BSN, Accelerated BSN (Johnson City, Kingsport, Sevierville), LPN-BSN, and RN-BSN/Dual Degree.
