Job Summary

The Associate Vice President for Enterprise Communications and Strategic Messaging is a senior communications leader responsible for directing complex enterprise-wide communications strategies, internal communications governance structures, messaging frameworks, and organizational communication systems that support the mission and strategic priorities of The University of Texas at San Antonio. The Associate Vice President serves as a strategic advisor and enterprise leader responsible for ensuring alignment of communications across the university, supporting organizational transformation and integration initiatives, strengthening executive and institutional messaging, and building a scalable communications infrastructure.

This position owns the development of enterprise communications governance, internal communications architecture, organizational change communications, and long-term strategic communications planning processes that support a highly distributed communications model spanning academic, research, clinical, and administrative operations. The role will guide the establishment of collaborative structures, standards, and communication systems that improve coordination, alignment, efficiency, and effectiveness across colleges, schools, centers, institutes, administrative units, and the academic health enterprise.

A key responsibility of the position is ensuring communications alignment between the university and UT Health San Antonio, overseeing enterprise-wide communications, executive messaging, and strategic priorities are coordinated effectively across both entities while recognizing their unique audiences, missions, and operational requirements.

Core Responsibilities

  1. Develops and leads the execution of an enterprise communications strategy that advances institutional priorities, supports long-term strategic goals, and strengthens the university’s reputation.
  2. Establishes and leads an Enterprise Communications Collaborative/Council to foster alignment, coordination, and shared planning among the distributed communications infrastructure and communications professionals across the institution.
  3. Creates and oversees communications governance frameworks, standards, policies, and processes that support effective enterprise-wide communication planning and execution.
  4. Directs the development of enterprise messaging frameworks that align institutional priorities, executive communications, and strategic initiatives across the university.
  5. Serves as a strategic advisor to executive leadership on communications strategies impacting multiple internal and external stakeholder groups and organizational priorities.
  6. Advises executive leaders, communications teams, and the President’s Office on institutional communications alignment for major initiatives and announcements, ensuring consistency with enterprise messaging frameworks, standards and strategic priorities.
  7. Oversee the development and implementation of multi-year communications strategies that support institutional transformation, change management, and enterprise-wide initiatives within a large, distributed communications environment.
  8. Leads stakeholder engagement and communications planning for integration efforts, and management of integration publications.
  9. Owns effectiveness of organizational change communications and recommends strategies that strengthen alignment and engagement.
  10. Advises executive leadership in building an alignment strategy for communications and messaging between the university and UT Health San Antonio to advance shared institutional priorities.
  11. Guides the development of frameworks and processes that address the communication needs across the enterprise.
  12. Stewards enterprise-wide communications planning and information sharing among communications leaders to support initiatives affecting both entities.
  13. Develops internal communications guidelines to include a proposed architecture and governance model that supports faculty, staff, researchers, clinicians, and institutional leadership. Evaluates current systems used by both entities to ensure efficient resource allocation.
  14. Directs the optimization of communication channels, editorial processes, audience segmentation strategies, and technologies that improve information flow and employee engagement across the enterprise.
  15. Establishes measurement frameworks and performance metrics to assess communications effectiveness and inform continuous improvement efforts.
  16. Oversees the development of scalable operating models, project management frameworks, workflows, and editorial planning processes that support a distributed communications organization.
  17. Enhances coordination and operational effectiveness across colleges, schools, centers, institutes, administrative units, and the academic health enterprise.
  18. Establishes continuous improvement initiatives that streamline communications processes, strengthen governance, and improve organizational efficiency and outcomes.
  19. Cultivates strong collaborative relationships across the institution and with external stakeholders, fostering partnership, transparency, innovation, and service excellence among communications professionals.
  20. Represents the Office of University Marketing, Communications, and Media on institutional committees, task forces, and strategic initiatives that advance university priorities.
  21. Oversees special projects and strategic initiatives as assigned by the Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Communications Officer.
  22. Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a related field.
  • Ten (10) years of marketing, communications, or PR experience reflecting increased responsibilities over time.
  • This position may require the ability to maintain the security and integrity of UT San Antonio and its infrastructure per Texas EO-GA-48.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in a related field.
  • Twelve (12) years of marketing, communications, or PR experience reflecting increased responsibilities over time.

Working Conditions

Office environment. Ability to travel to and from meetings, training sessions, or other business-related events. Workdays, areas, and work hours may vary depending on the department’s needs.

Physical Demands

Sedentary work; sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary; if walking and standing are required, only occasionally. Ability to exert up to 10 pounds of force to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.

This position will work primarily on campus. Travel and parking expenses are the employee’s responsibility.
