Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The Department of Criminal Justice at North Carolina Central University (NCCU) is one of the largest academic units on campus, with nearly 700 graduate and undergraduate majors. The undergraduate program holds the distinction of being the first HBCU program to receive endorsement from the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences. The department is also home to two distinguished institutes: the Institute for Homeland Security and Emergency Management, and the Juvenile Justice Institute.
As one of the largest academic units at NCCU, the Department of Criminal Justice is poised for continued growth at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. This expansion underscores the need for this position to ensure high-quality instruction and advising for both in-person and online programs. Supporting student success, including retention and graduation, is a top priority for both the University and the department.
The mission of the department is to support the university’s efforts to promote student success (i.e., retention and graduation) at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and to support the student’s personal and professional development.
Primary Purpose of Position
The Department of Criminal Justice at North Carolina Central University is seeking applications to fill a nine-month full time permanent Clinical Assistant Professor position (F610753) starting Spring 2027. The selected candidate will be expected to teach a full load (12 credit hours) per semester, to include course instructions that achieve student learning outcomes, and engage in service with the department and university consistent with the Faculty Workload Policy. Additionally, the selected candidate will be expected to engage in minimum research that leads to publication and engage in service with the Department and University Community consistent with the Faculty Workload Policy.
Criminal Justice is the largest undergraduate program at NCCU, and it is projected to grow at the undergraduate and graduate levels. This position is essential to the department’s efforts to support all undergraduate programs (face-to-face and online) and the graduate program (Hyflex), a priority of both the University and department.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to excellence in teaching, student success, and service. The successful candidate will possess the ability to deliver high-quality instruction, engage in scholarly activities that support professional growth and promotion, and actively contribute to departmental, university, and professional service.
Primary teaching responsibilities include advanced expertise in teaching research methods and statistics, along with excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills. The ideal candidate will be proficient in utilizing Canvas or a comparable learning management system to support student learning. The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in multiple instructional modalities, including in-person, online, and HyFlex formats, while incorporating Open Educational Resources (OER) and evidence-based instructional practices.
Additional teaching responsibilities include curriculum development, student learning assessment at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, and mentoring graduate students through thesis and applied research projects. The successful candidate should demonstrate a commitment to innovative pedagogy, student engagement, and continuous improvement in teaching effectiveness.
The ideal candidate will maintain a minimum scholarly agenda that supports professional development and promotion expectations. Opportunities to collaborate on externally funded research and applied projects through the Institute for Homeland Security and Emergency Management and the Juvenile Justice Institute are available and encouraged.
The faculty member will be expected to actively participate in service activities within the Department of Criminal Justice, the University, and relevant academic and professional organizations. A demonstrated willingness to contribute to departmental initiatives, accreditation efforts, student recruitment and retention, and other service activities is essential.
The successful candidate must possess the ability to work both independently and collaboratively with faculty, staff, students, and community partners to promote student learning and success in a diverse educational environment. Exceptional oral and written communication skills are required.
Preferred Qualifications
All areas of specialization will be considered. Candidates with demonstrated expertise in teaching Research Methods and Statistics at the undergraduate and graduate levels are especially encouraged to apply.
