Florida State College at Jacksonville (FSCJ) is seeking a Dean of Liberal Arts & Sciences for Mathematics. The Dean of Liberal Arts and Sciences – Mathematics provides leadership for one of Florida State College at Jacksonville’s most vibrant, dynamic, and highly engaged academic departments. Spanned across multiple campuses, centers, and off-site locations, the department encompasses a diverse portfolio of instructional levels, pathways, modalities, methods, and co-curricular activities. The Dean provides strategic and academic leadership for Mathematics across the College, recognizing mathematics as a foundational discipline that supports general education, developmental education, dual credit earning, transfer education, and workforce preparation.
The Dean will lead the continuous improvement of mathematics education at FSCJ by refining mathematics pathways, placement requirements, course sequencing, gateway courses, and co-requisite support; improving student success; addressing achievement gaps across instructional modalities; promoting emerging practices in mathematics instruction; maintaining academic quality and rigor; and advancing students’ progression toward meeting mathematics requirements and degree completion. The position will focus on improving student success, retention, progression, and completion in mathematics by using enrollment and student achievement data to identify barriers and implement evidence-based strategies in collaboration with faculty, academic administration, advising, enrollment management, tutoring, institutional research, outcomes assessment, and student success units.
The Dean will foster a culture of faculty collaboration, innovation, professional growth, and continuous improvement by supporting evidence-based mathematics pedagogy, effective use of instructional technology and assessment methods, multiple instructional modalities, co-curricular activities, and emerging approaches to mathematics education.
The Dean will also develop and maintain productive relationships with K–12 educators, peer colleges, transfer universities, employers, professional organizations, and community partners to strengthen pathways and opportunities for students. The Dean will promote co-curricular opportunities that strengthen students’ connection to Mathematics and the College community by supporting mathematics clubs and teams, math competitions, math conferences, recruiting and coaching, mathematics-related events, scholarship disbursement, and other student engagement initiatives.
At a minimum the selected candidate must have master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution with a concentration related to the assigned instructional/student service area(s) supplemented by at least two (2) years of supervisory and/or teaching/counseling experience in higher education at the two (2) or four (4) year college level. Additionally, the preferred candidate will have a Doctorate degree in mathematics, mathematical sciences, statistics or mathematics education from an accredited institution supplemented by three (3) years of supervisory/administrative and/or teaching experience at the collegiate level
