Job Summary
The College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA) at the University of Michigan seeks outstanding scholars for new tenure-track assistant professor faculty positions as part of the Michigan Program for Advancing Cultural Transformation (M-PACT). This hiring program, a federally funded, university-wide faculty initiative, aims to recruit faculty with a demonstrated and ongoing record of driving transformative research, life-changing teaching, and accessible clinical care that will support the health of all, including communities who have been underserved. By partnering with faculty throughout their careers, M-PACT strengthens the capacity of those who serve as catalysts for change in academic and healthcare environments via their scholarship, teaching, and/or service activities with research interests suitable for funding by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This call is part of a broader university effort to enhance inclusive excellence across the biomedical and health sciences community. This is a full-time, university year appointment with an anticipated start date of August 25, 2027.
The Department of Anthropology is seeking a candidate whose research and teaching will focus on either:
1) human health using an evolutionary lens. We are especially interested in applicants conducting empirical fieldwork providing important insights into health, disease, and inequity in health outcomes. The ability to conduct research at multiple scales (e.g., molecular, individual, population) is highly desirable, as is scholarship that provides both mechanistic and theoretical insights into human health and disparities in health outcomes.

2) the cultural/medical anthropology of mental health, with a focus on health inequities and/or underserved communities. We construe the anthropology of mental health broadly and encourage applications from scholars with critical interests in psychology, psychiatry, post-colonial psychiatry, psychoanalytic theory, mental health diagnostics, global mental health, mad studies, subjectivity, emotion and consciousness. We welcome applicants conducting research in any geographical area and especially encourage applications from candidates whose work engages colleagues across our four-field department.
We anticipate that the successful applicant will build bridges to other departments and schools at the University of Michigan (e.g. medicine, psychology, public health, social work) and engage researchers in the life and medical sciences. We seek a scholar with exceptional promise and a strong commitment to transformative and impactful research, teaching, and service.
Required Qualifications*
Applicants must have a Ph. D. or terminal degree conferred by July 1, 2027, never have held a tenure-track faculty appointment, and be eligible for Early Stage Investigator Status for NIH grants.
