Department
The Anne Spencer Daves College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences at Florida State University invites applications for a Professor and Director of the School of Teacher Education. The College encourages applications from visionary leaders committed to education and its role in maximizing human potential. Reporting to the Dean of the College, the Director is responsible for the overall success of the School, its students, and its faculty and staff.
The School of Teacher Education is committed to high quality personnel preparation programs; service to the state of Florida; and high-quality scholarly research in elementary education, early childhood education, reading/language arts, second language education, special education, blindness and low vision, science education, math education, social science education, English education, and related areas. The School strives to provide undergraduate and graduate students with world-class training in teaching, research, and professional development. Through the guidance and mentorship of faculty, students graduate to serve as educational leaders who will contribute to the betterment of a pluralistic, global society in the context of the state of Florida’s needs for an educated, global-minded citizenry.
In addition to mentoring and preparing the next generation of educators, faculty engage in a diverse range of research activities. Faculty work routinely appears in prestigious publications and is cited by peers. Furthermore, faculty receive support from a robust Office of Research to pursue research opportunities, professional awards, and more.
Responsibilities
- Provide leadership and strategic direction for all academic programs in the School
- Lead and enhance the School’s strategic efforts for research productivity and excellence
- Lead the effort for identifying the major priorities of the School, including the combined BS/MS pathways in teacher education, and other graduate programs (e.g., PhD and master’s)
- Align the School’s strategic planning goals with the strategic plans of the University and the College
- Manage budgetary, personnel, and other departmental resources
- Foster and maintain a supportive environment for all faculty, staff, and students in the School
- Provide leadership and direction for creating a culture of transparency and open communication within the School
- Enhance the rigor and quality of research in the School, as well as the opportunities for PhD students
- Collaborate with the Director of the Florida Center for Reading Research and the Learning Systems Institute to continue developing productive research partnerships that promote the work of faculty in the department
- Lead efforts to build relationships within and outside the University that lead to the betterment of the College, and the well-being of the community and the region
Qualifications
- Earned doctorate from one of the educational disciplines found within the School, or a closely-related field.
- A record of scholarly accomplishments consistent with the rank of full professor with tenure; exceptionally qualified candidates may also be considered for the Mack and Effie Campbell Distinguished Professorship.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in academic leadership, including budgetary oversight and management
- Broad and diverse research knowledge and experience at Research 1 universities—to understand, guide, and communicate with faculty working in diverse fields within various paradigms and methodologies
- Experience as a leader for faculty members’ professional development and growth.
- Experience with building and maintaining relationships with K-12 and community agency field partners and field-placement management
- Demonstrated commitment to faculty development and advancement
Considerations
This is a Faculty position.
This position requires successful completion of a criminal history background check.

This nine-month position includes a partial summer salary for the Director role as well as an administrative stipend for service during the traditional academic year.
