Assistant Professor of Biology (Anatomy and Physiology)

The Department of Biological Sciences at Randolph College seeks applicants for a tenure-track assistant professor in anatomy and/or physiology to begin in August of 2027. The position requires experience in and commitment to teaching, research, and service in a small-liberal arts setting. The position is an academic (9-month) tenure-track appointment with a teaching load of six courses per year. The successful candidate will teach courses in Anatomy & Physiology, introductory biology, biology senior program, and develop new courses in the candidate’s area of expertise to complement existing course offerings.

We welcome applicants from a variety of subfield backgrounds related to vertebrate anatomy and physiology but would be especially enthusiastic about candidates with teaching and research experience in embryology/developmental biology, animal physiology, animal nutrition, and/or mammalogy.

The successful candidate will be expected to develop an active and independent research program focusing on any level of biological organization in animal physiology, commensurate with the needs and resources of the department. Service to the department and the institution, including undergraduate academic advising and committee work, is also required.

Primary responsibilities

  • Teach six courses per academic year, including Anatomy and Physiology. Additional courses may include Introductory Biology, Senior Program, and lectures and/or laboratory courses in the candidate’s area of expertise. Typical teaching load is 3 courses per semester in our innovative Take2 curricular model where courses are offered in two 7-week sessions each semester.
  • Maintain regular weekly office hours to provide academic support and guidance to students enrolled in assigned courses.
  • Serve as an academic advisor to assigned undergraduate students (majors and non-majors).
  • Develop and maintain an active research program that includes undergraduate students and is commensurate with the needs and resources of the department. Randolph College has established undergraduate research funding such as the Randolph Innovative Student Experience (RISE) grant, the Randolph Summer Research Program (SRP) to support summer student research, and the annual Randolph Symposium of Artists and Scholars. There are also funds available to support faculty and student travel to conferences. Start-up funds are available for this position.
  • Serve on college-wide committees focused on faculty governance, curricular development, and enhancing campus-wide excellence.
  • Participate in faculty meetings focused on departmental operations and planning, faculty development, pedagogical strategies, and student support initiatives.

Required qualifications for tenure-track assistant professor

  • A Ph. D. in biology, physiology, cell biology, or a closely related field by August 2027.
  • Demonstrated or evidence of potential excellence in undergraduate instruction (in-person).
  • A commitment to inclusive learning, active teaching strategies, and student-centered pedagogy, as demonstrated by experience, expertise, and/or formal training.
  • Evidence of active research and scholarship.
  • A commitment to inclusive undergraduate teaching in a liberal arts setting and a willingness to engage with institutional student success initiatives.
  • Must be available and willing to teach in-person, on-campus courses held in a 7-week format.

Preferred education and experience

  • Teaching experience at the undergraduate level, including Human Anatomy and Physiology lecture and laboratory.
  • Research experience that includes mentoring undergraduate students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Experience creating a student-centered learning environment, including evidence of teaching effectiveness and/or training in pedagogical strategies.
  • Record of publication in peer-reviewed journals, including first-authored papers.
  • Record of acquiring extramural research funds to support the candidate’s research.
