Job Summary
The Philosophy & Religion program in the School of Humanities at the University of Southern Mississippi invites qualified applicants for a full-time, 9-month, non-tenure track, Assistant Teaching Professor in Philosophy to begin Fall 2027. The program has a new inter-disciplinary BA in Philosophy, Religion, and Law that offers three pathways of concentration: Ethics, Philosophy of Law, and Religion and World Cultures. We are seeking a candidate whose area of specialization is open, but we are looking for someone to fulfill our needs in applied ethics, particularly Environmental Ethics and Healthcare Ethics. In addition, the program would like to develop and offer a new course in Ethics and Artificial Intelligence. The teaching load is 4/4.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Teach undergraduate courses in Environmental Ethics, Healthcare Ethics, possibly Ethics and Artificial Intelligence (this would be a new course offering), and survey courses in both conventional and online formats
  2. Advise and mentor undergraduate students
  3. Participate in program assessment
  4. Fulfill service obligations appropriate to teaching-track faculty
  5. Performs other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications
PhD in Philosophy by the time of appointment

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of computers and appropriate teaching technologies

Preferred Qualifications
A record of publication and scholarship as well as teaching experience in both conventional and online formats. Knowledge of Canvas helpful.
