Position Summary

JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Assistant Director of Academic Advising has three areas of responsibility that contribute to the success and retention of undergraduate students: (1) create efficient and effective policies and procedures to onboard transfer and re-admitted students (2) provide holistic support for transfer and re-admitted students; and (3) collaborate with admissions, department chairs, faculty advisors, and staff who interact with transfer and re-admit students.

OUTCOME:
A positive impact on transfer and re-admitted student success and persistence towards graduation via coordination, transparency, communication, and accessibility. Contributions to meaningful, accurate, and well-informed academic advising and mentoring.

Essential Functions

Direct Student Support (50%)

  • Provide advising and registration guidance to incoming transfer and re-admitted students as part of their enrollment and onboarding process.
  • Serve as the primary academic advisor for returning undeclared and pre-nursing students as well as the Back on Track mentor for students on academic probation-specializing in those who are transfer and re-admitted students.
  • Support the retention and progression initiatives for transfer students in collaboration with other academic advising department initiatives.
  • Serve as an advocate for students who transfer from one institution to another; monitor and report on the academic progress and mobility of transfer students.
  • Contribute to first-year student advising services and/or initiatives as a member of a multi-skilled, adaptable advising team.

Policy/Procedure Creation (25%)

  • Stay current on local and national transfer trends in order to maintain excellent transfer advising.
  • Evaluate the quality and efficacy of transfer and re-admit advising processes to continuously improve the service and experience for these student populations.
  • Support the accuracy of transfer equivalency documents and processes with the Registrar’s Office.
  • Review and participate in the publication preparation process for students transferring to YCP including transfer enrollment information, advising documents, and other brochures created for transfer students.

Collaborative Endeavors (25%)

  • Develop collaborative partnerships with offices on campus who work with transfer and re-admitted students to create programming and/or other initiatives for these populations.
  • Develop and facilitate department chair relationships for supporting the advising and registration experience of transfer and re-admitted students.
  • Partner with the Enrollment Management division, the Registrar’s office, and other departments within the Student Life and Success Division to develop and maintain transfer services, orientation, and resources.
  • Serve on associated college-wide and Student Life and Success Division committees.

Experience and Education Required

  • Master’s degree in College Student Personnel, Counseling, Higher Education, Communication, Education, or other academic discipline.
  • At least three years of professional experience working in diverse academic environments with students in a college or university setting.
  • Direct experience in academic advising with transfer students preferred.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; keen interest in working with and helping students in an academic environment.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize multiple assignments, and anticipate deadlines.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a team of advisors within the Academic Advising Center, along with faculty, staff, and students within the academic community.
  • Excellent computer skills including familiarity with Windows environment, Microsoft Office products, and academic advising software.
  • Knowledge of academic environments, particularly in higher education, and principles of student development theory, and academic advising.
  • Commitment to working with and helping students in an academic environment focusing on career and professional development.
  • Knowledge of the Federal Educational Right to Privacy Act (FERPA) and sensitivity to student academic rights and responsibilities.
  • Flexibility to work independently and, when appropriate, make decisions, solve problems, and initiate tasks.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across Divisions and Departments of the College.
