Type of Position: 12-month Faculty position

Position Summary

The assistant professor will be responsible for teaching 18 semester credits/year and fulfilling the responsibilities of the Director of Experiential Learning.

The Director of Experiential Learning is responsible for coordinating and managing the Master of Science in Nutrition and Integrative Health (MSNIH) experiential learning initiatives, with oversight of the Supervised Telehealth Clinic and Simulated Online Clinic. This role develops and maintains policies, procedures, and forms, ensuring compliance and consistency across both clinic formats and alignment with other departmental clinics. The Director recruits and manages clinic faculty, facilitating regular meetings to maintain a high-quality student experience. Additional responsibilities include representing the master’s program at internal and external events, hosting webinars, managing Certified Nutrition Specialist (CNS)-related information for students, and supporting alumni licensing needs.

Courses to be taught include Micronutrients, Clinical Skills, and Clinical Strategies. The curriculum is grounded in a holistic philosophy that integrates the biological, psychological, social, and cultural roles of food in our lives. All courses are held in an asynchronous online environment, and the position does not require relocation to Maryland.

Director of Experiential Learning Role

Responsibilities include:

  • Provide oversight of the nutrition clinic and associated courses
  • Develop and update policies, procedures, and forms for the nutrition student clinic, and coordinate with the Natural Care Center
  • Collaborate with HR and Department Manger to recruit and hire clinic faculty/supervisors
  • Hold clinic faculty/supervisor meetings to maintain consistency of student experience
  • Conduct student information sessions to discuss clinic course options
  • Collaborate with department leadership in planning and program evaluation for clinic
  • Collaborate with the Career Services Coordinator to network and develop partnerships with external organizations for the clinic
  • Update all clinic and CNS-related items on Community Nutrition page
  • Conduct CNS information webinars
  • Provide alumni support for licensing

TEACHING

An annual plan of teaching and credit-bearing course assignments will be agreed to between the Department Chair and faculty member prior to the beginning of the academic year. Teaching responsibilities for credit-bearing courses include:

Course Preparation and Instruction:

  • Update course syllabus in accordance with the program timetables.
  • Prior to the start of the course, provide a copy of the course syllabus to the Department Chair (or their designee) for distribution and for the department’s records.
  • Prepare instructional materials (e.g. lecture summaries, quizzes, exams).
  • Provide engaging and quality instruction appropriate to graduate-level learning.

Student Assessment and Evaluation:

  • Coordinate, review and grade all assignments.
  • Return all assignments to students.
  • Prepare written evaluation of students’ performance (if appropriate to your program).
  • Record and submit student grades to Registrar in a timely manner and as directed.
  • Attend academic and/or clinical evaluation meetings overseen by the Department Chair (or designee) as applicable.
  • Maintain consistent office hours.
  • Monitor all Incomplete grades and dates on which work is due. Submit appropriate grade change to the Registrar.
  • Instruct students to complete course evaluations.
  • Participate in program and institutional student learning outcomes assessment activities.

Partnership with Peers:

  • Advise Department Manager regarding last-minute schedule changes.
  • Attend program faculty meetings and cross-program all-faculty meetings.
  • Collaborate with other faculty to align course content and learning across the curriculum.

RESEARCH/SCHOLARSHIP

An annual plan of research/scholarship, representing approximately 5 hours of work per week, will be agreed on between the Department Chair and faculty member prior to the beginning of the academic year. Research/scholarship activities vary based on ranked position. At a minimum, the faculty will demonstrate ongoing faculty development by:

  • Participating in activities of professional organizations.
  • Engaging in study and/or research appropriate to their area of expertise.
  • Engaging in professional practice that informs teaching.
  • Engaging in general faculty development activities provided by NDMU.
  • If the doctorate or appropriate terminal degree is not held, the faculty member demonstrates active progress towards degree completion.

SERVICE TO THE UNIVERSITY

An annual plan of service, representing approximately 5 hours of work per week, will be agreed on between the Department Chair and Faculty member prior to the beginning of the academic year. Service activities as part of a ranked faculty member’s responsibilities are primarily intended to directly benefit the University. Examples of service to the University are provided below:

Service Internal to the University:

Activities that directly support or benefit NDMU, minimum 75% of service time, include:

  • Effective participation on the appointed department, program, school, or University committees, search committees, task forces, and/or advisory groups
  • University or departmental leadership roles beyond the faculty member’s standard load, without additional compensation
  • Gathering and analyzing data and/or writing reports for assessment or accreditation purposes, beyond what is typically expected to occur as a standard part of teaching courses
  • Advising or sponsorship of student organizations or activities
  • Participation in admissions, alumni, or online/on-campus community events
  • Professional presentations, exhibitions, performances, public speaking and media appearances, officially on behalf of the University that are not defined as peer-reviewed scholarship
  • Mentorship of other faculty
  • Academic or professional mentorship of students beyond that typically expected as a faculty member while teaching a course (e.g., career related advising, separate from Student Affairs’ role in academic advising)
  • Course and curriculum development beyond the faculty member’s standard load, without additional compensation
  • Development of instructional materials, resources, webinars, and workshops for broad use by other faculty within or across programs, beyond the faculty member’s standard load and without additional compensation
  • Other contributions to the University’s mission

Service External to the University

Activities that have indirect benefit to NDMU, maximum 25% of service time, include:

  • Leadership in professional associations
  • Leadership or service within the wider educational community
  • Outreach to the community which demonstrates professional expertise by communication or applying it in ways that benefit citizens outside the University

Education and Experience Qualifications

Required:

  • Master’s degree in nutrition or related field
  • Minimum of two years teaching graduate-level nutrition courses (corresponding to at least 18 total semester credits)
  • RD/RDN or CNS credential
  • Minimum of five years full-time clinical nutrition practice (or equivalent hours)

Preferred:

  • Doctoral degree in nutrition or related field
  • Training in functional/integrative nutrition
  • Experience with online course development
  • Experience teaching online courses
  • Experience as clinic director/manager
