Southwestern Community College District is a single college district providing higher education in Chula Vista, San Ysidro, Otay Mesa, National City and Coronado. SCCD’s strategic south San Diego County locations position the College to provide exceptional service to a binational community on the U.S.-Mexico International Border. Southwestern Community College District currently enrolls approximately 28,000 students annually. RESPONSIBILITIES: The School of Language, Literature, and Humanities is seeking a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor of English, who will work under the direction of the Dean. This position requires a candidate skilled in teaching developmental and transfer-level composition courses, including co-requisite support models. Active involvement in peer evaluations, peer mentoring, student learning outcomes (SLOs), program review, committee work, and curriculum development is also required.
Knowledge and Abilities:
1. Subject matter preparation:
a. Experience in teaching general education/non-major English Composition
2. Demonstrated ability and effectiveness as a faculty member:
a. Understanding of the role and purpose of the community college.
b. Ability to evaluate ones andragogy and its effectiveness in facilitating student learning.
c. Knowledge and practice of culturally responsive pedagogy and andragogy that supports student-centered, self-reflective, and student-capable approaches.
d. Demonstrated use of current teaching methodologies that engage racially, ethnically, economically, academically, and culturally diverse students; that promote critical thinking; and that emphasize cooperation and collaboration.
e. Sensitivity to-and respect for-a rich and diverse academic environment, inclusive of students, faculty, and staff of varying social, economic, cultural, ideological, and ethnic backgrounds, as well as those with disabilities.
f. Commitment to collegiality and collaboration by working as a team with faculty and staff to enhance instruction, curriculum, and student success, as well as in the planning of class schedules and teaching rotations.
g. Experience teaching online courses.
h. Commitment to professional responsibilities and associations outside of the classroom through contributions to departmental, division, and college activities.
Education and Experience:
Minimum Qualifications: (Faculty and Academic Administrator Positions Only)
Masters Degree in English, literature, comparative literature, or composition
Bachelors in any of the above AND Masters in linguistics, TESL, speech, education with a specialization in reading, creative writing, or journalism
a valid California Community College Instructor Credential in Language Arts or Literature.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate the following desired qualifications:
- Demonstrated commitment and success working in a diverse and multicultural community.
- Experience and proven success in addressing equity gaps within the discipline in the classroom.
- Demonstrated experience with equity-driven teaching practices that are designed for, and responsive to, the needs of students in a Hispanic Serving Institution.
- Minimum of three years of recent, successful experience teaching developmental (including co-requisite support courses) and transfer composition at the community college level.
- Relevant coursework in rhetoric, composition, and/or pedagogical theory addressing marginalized communities.
- Experience and expertise in culturally responsive, equity-minded, and trauma-informed teaching practices.
- Experience collaborating with faculty and other campus staff in developing and/or implementing programs or initiatives that are specifically designed to help historically underrepresented students achieve their educational goals (such as Puente, Umoja, Bayan, Restorative Justice, etc.).
- Demonstrated experience implementing theoretical frameworks designed to empower and affirm marginalized communities as well as advocating for the success of an increasingly diverse student body (e.g., first-generation college students, students with physical and learning disabilities, LGBTQIA, non-native speakers, transfronterizo and immigrant, active-duty military and veterans, formerly incarcerated and system-involved students, etc.).
- Completed certification and demonstrated experience delivering high quality distance-education courses under the principles of Universal Design for Learning.
- Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development and a desire to maintain currency with evolving critical frameworks and methodologies.
Candidates must exhibit an appreciation of, a sensitivity to, and respect for a rich and diverse academic environment, inclusive of students, faculty, and staff of varying social, economic, cultural, ideological and ethnic backgrounds, and those with disabilities. Experience working in a community with a similar diversity pattern as is found in the service area for Southwestern College is desirable.
Upon initial employment, full-time faculty members are placed on the salary schedule based upon years of experience and education. Initial salary placement for experience can range from $55,070.00-$82,863.00 per year. Faculty members are encouraged to continue their professional development through additional study qualifying them for advancement on the salary schedule.
