Job description

The Language and Literature Department at Valley City State University seeks to fill a full time, tenure-track faculty position for Fall Semester 2026.

The primary responsibilities of this position are to teach a variety of Spanish courses and to lead the Spanish programs, including student recruitment and retainment. Other than Spanish majors, minors, and certificate recipients, these courses will include students seeking to fulfill General Education requirements and students from other academic programs. This person will be an integral part of the Spanish and Spanish Education programs.

Main duties include:

  • Teaching courses in Spanish language, Spanish grammar and composition, Spanish conversation, and Hispanic history, literature, and culture.
  • Staying current with course content, evaluating teaching methods, and working to improve student learning and engagement.
  • Recruiting, retaining, and advising Spanish/Spanish Education students.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Spanish or Humanistic Studies

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 3-5 years of classroom and online teaching experience in higher education
  • Fluency in reading, writing, and speaking Spanish
  • Experience expanding Spanish programs in higher education
  • Experience observing and mentoring undergraduate student teachers in their secondary education Spanish classrooms
  • Experience organizing travel abroad opportunities for students
  • Experience advising students in Spanish/Spanish Education programs

Compensation:
The salary for this position is commensurate with qualifications. The university is located in the southeastern part of the state in the city from which the institution takes its name. Valley City has a population of approximately 6,500 and is located 60 miles west of Fargo on Interstate 94, making the campus easily accessible both from the east and west. The location of the community lends itself to cultural and recreational activities, and the newly constructed Gaukler Wellness Center offers a variety of services to members.
