Required Qualifications:
- Masters degree in higher education, student affairs, student development, leadership or related field.
- 10 or more years of progressive leadership experience in student involvement, campus recreation, or student union/centers or related areas.
- Experience supervising and developing full-time, professional staff across multiple functional areas, with a demonstrated commitment to building high-performing, accountable teams.
- Demonstrated experience leading cross-functional collaborations, committees, or initiatives that extend beyond direct reporting lines.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Doctoral or other terminal degree in higher education or related field.
- National-level engagement or leadership experience through professional associations, multi-institutional initiatives, or contributions to the field of student engagement and student success.
- Demonstrated experience advancing inclusive engagement strategies that support first-generation, Pell-eligible, and student populations.
- Experience integrating co-curricular engagement with academic success initiatives, enrollment or retention strategies, or institutional student success frameworks.
- Experience leading institutional change initiatives that require collaboration, influence, and alignment rather than formal authority.
- Experience using assessment, data, and evidence-informed practices to evaluate programs, inform decision-making, and demonstrate impact.
Job Description:
Reporting to the Vice President for Student Success, the Assistant Vice President for Student Engagement is a full-time, 12-month position that serves as a member of the Divisions Senior Staff. The AVP provides visionary and strategic leadership for the successful facilitation and delivery of a comprehensive student engagement strategy designed to improve student success through fostering a sense of connection and institutional connection. The position provides leadership and support to the departments of Campus Recreation, LBJ Student Center and Event Services, and Student Involvement and Engagement.
Utilizing the Student Success framework, the Assistant Vice President will work across the division and the institution to develop a co-curricular experience that supports retention, persistence, and holistic development that best supports Texas State students.
Job Duties:
Provide Leadership for Student Engagement Initiatives
- Provide visionary and strategic leadership for a comprehensive, university-wide student engagement strategy that fosters belonging, connection, leadership development, and co-curricular learning in support of student retention, persistence, and graduation.
- Advance a student success-oriented engagement model that leverages evidence-based practices, assessment data, and national best practices to demonstrate the impact of involvement on student engagement and leadership development.
- Oversee the development and assessment of campus-wide programs, initiatives, and traditions that promote civic engagement, leadership capacity, and community connection across the student lifecycle.
- Provide leadership and accountability for the integration of assessment, data analytics, and reporting within student engagement units to support continuous improvement, strategic decision-making, and executive-level communication of impact.
- Ensure student engagement policies, practices, and organizational structures align with divisional and university strategic plans, equity and access commitments, risk management standards, and evolving student needs.
- Foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, accountability, and professional development within student engagement units by investing in staff development, succession planning, and high-performing leadership teams.
Operational Management
- Provide direct supervision to the Executive Director of Student Involvement and Engagement, Director of the LBJ Student Center and Event Services, and Director of Campus Recreation.
- Develop, oversee, and assess university-wide programs and services that are informed by best practices in higher education to improve retention and graduation rates and expand student involvement and leadership practices.
- Provide secondary level oversight of auxiliary funding sources and student fee accounts to ensure proper management and fiscal controls.
Other Duties as Assigned
- Advance the Universitys learning mission by providing leadership for student services, programs, and activities that foster student development and engagement the complete student body.
- Assures departmental strategic initiatives, goals and objectives align with and contribute to division and university vision, mission, and goals.
- Represents the Division and the University at university and community/town & gown events.
- Represent the Division of Student Success on various university committees and at appropriate activities and functions, both on and off campus.
- Serves as a resource person for students, parents, and other constituents in helping them solve problems and obtain information.
- Coordinate special projects and other duties as assigned by the Vice President of Student Success.
