Job Description:
Nassau Community College invites applications for a full-time Dean of Instruction in the Office of Academic Affairs. The Dean of Instruction is responsible for the overall leadership, management, and supervision of all assigned academic departments/areas of the College, as aligned to the College’s Strategic Plan and Goals, using the highest ethical standards. In addition, the Dean of Instruction works expeditiously and diligently on behalf of the institution while operating with a data-informed and equity-focused approach to enhance student access and enrollment in collaboration with multiple internal and external stakeholders; provides leadership in maintaining a student and learner center philosophy and focus on academic initiatives with a clear focus on successful student outcomes; works collaboratively with all assigned department/area supervisors to ensure relevance and quality of curriculum and instruction; proposes and develops new academic programs in response to identified community needs; participates, facilitates, and monitors departments/areas through all assessment processes, including but not limited to, student learning, department self-study, and program review(s), in order to improve performance; works with all assigned department/area supervisors, registrar’s office, and advisement office to ensure appropriate approvals, scheduling and availability of classes and other documents and needs necessary for students to complete programs of study/certificates in a timely fashion; develops and leads initiatives that advance professional growth and scholarship among faculty, especially those that foster innovative teaching and enhance student learning, including but not limited to participation in new faculty orientation and the conduct of classroom observations; works with the Office of Labor Relations to approve and finalize reasonable faculty qualifications; works with the Office of Labor Relations to understand all collective bargaining agreements (CBAs) on Campus and ensure departmental/area adherence to appropriate CBAs, including but not limited to disciplinary procedures, Chairperson’s duties, and the duties of the P & B; assists students by serving as a person of final resort with respect to difficulties encountered by students requiring application of appropriate College policies/protocols/procedures; represents the College to various external entities and with outside agencies in matters relating to the College’s academic offerings; supervises and directs staff, as assigned; maintains current knowledge of laws, codes, ordinances, regulations, and pending legislation, relative to areas of responsibility; all reporting, external and internal, necessary for local, state and/or federal compliance in assigned area(s); exhibits fiscal responsibility and accountability in the management of all assigned budgets and necessary reporting; responsible for identifying and eliminating redundancies in assigned areas, as well as working collaboratively with other senior administrators to eliminate redundancies and ensure effective and efficient operation of the College; assists in institutional management, policy development, college advancement, and strategic planning, as needed; attend, in a confidential capacity, to personnel administration and disciplinary procedures, as needed; develops and maintain strong working relationships with all areas of the College; serve as a member of the senior leadership team; serve on committees as appointed; meet with and brief the Board of Trustees and/or with individual trustees when required; provide the President, President’s Cabinet, the Board of Trustees, and general and outside counsel with confidential information and advice in the performance of duties as a direct College representative during negotiations and contract administration with the collective bargaining representatives of College employees, pursuant to the Taylor Law of the State of New York, as needed; participate directly in labor negotiations when necessary; work effectively with diverse populations; other duties as assigned. Requirements:
The successful candidate will have a Master’s Degree in a related area; ten (10) years of experience in higher education, primarily involved in teaching and learning; experience in administration, supervisory, and/or organizational leadership, and/or directing institutional initiatives or programs; experience in strategic planning and implementation; familiarity with the mission, goals, and objectives of the College and the demographics of the current student body and staff of the College; knowledge of best practices in community college education, student affairs, and student development; knowledge of educational theories, practices, program development, and assessment; knowledge of local community and service area; ability to maintain confidentiality and work independently; knowledge and skill in identifying problems, analyzing data, and making recommendations; a high level of emotional intelligence and energy; excellent oral, written, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills; ability to interpret, apply and explain rules, regulations, policies, and procedures; ability to develop collaborative relationships with students, faculty, administration, and internal and external constituencies; ability to manage and adapt to change, make difficult decisions, encourage conflict resolution, and assure employee and department accountability; and strong management skills.
Additional Information:
In addition, the successful candidate will preferably have a Doctorate in Higher Education Administration or a related area; experience teaching at a Community College; experience working in a unionized environment; experience with current management system(s) and programs used in higher education and/or the related area(s), including but not limited to Ellucian Banner, PeopleSoft, Visio, and Adobe Professional, as well as being proficient in MS Office (Excel, Word, Outlook and PowerPoint).
