Dean of Student Services
New River Community College is a two-year state institution of higher education operating under a statewide system of 23 community colleges. The college is located on a one-hundred plus acre site at the intersection of U.S. Routes 11 and 100 in Dublin, Virginia. The campus provides modern, well-equipped facilities for the career technical education programs as well as for the college transfer programs. Approximately 4,000 students comprise the student body.

Duties:
The position will report to the Vice President for Instruction and Student Services and will be responsible for leading and managing the Division of Student Services. Primary duties will include:
- Implements, supervises, and evaluates comprehensive programs, procedures, and policies of student services and student success along the continuum of recruitment, entry, matriculation, completion, and employment for a diverse student body for the college’s campus in Dublin and Christiansburg site.
- Leads, supervises, and evaluates a team of student services personnel, including career coaches in the regional high schools, who are committed to innovation, accountability, and excellence.
- Monitors the development, implementation, and assessment of the college’s annual outreach/enrollment plan with associated goals, strategies, action plans, and timelines.
- Provides leadership for and coordination with other college units and services in developing programs for promoting retention and student success.
- Coordinates efforts to ensure knowledge and accuracy of academic advising information across the college, supervises the placement testing program for the college, and coordinates academic advising for students through both traditional and virtual means.
- Represents and advocates for students and the college to internal and external constituencies.
- Provides oversight and responsibility for development and implementation of student activities programming, including publication of the Student Handbook and management of the Student Activities budget.
- Works collaboratively with faculty, staff, administrators, and students and maintains a close working relationship between academic divisions and Student Services.
- Makes effective use of technology in providing information and services in support of Student Services.
- Supervises the facilitation of due process for student conduct and complaint issues.
- Serves as liaison with external agencies for referral services for students.
- Serves on the Behavioral Intervention Team and works with college officials to manage student-related campus crises.
KSA’s/Required Qualifications
Earned master’s degree in student services, education, or directly related field from a regionally accredited college or university. Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to community college philosophy and student success initiatives. Demonstrated effective leadership skills, problem-solving and strategic planning skills. Knowledge of effective practices in recruiting, selecting, evaluating, mentoring and supervising employees. Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, students, and the public to engage, provide support to, and motivate students. Administrative experience and supervisory experience. Demonstrated ability to lead a diverse staff. Knowledge of strategic planning and budgeting. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Demonstrated effective use of technology. Demonstrated ability to build consensus around strategic initiatives.
Additional Considerations:
Earned doctorate in student services, education, or directly related field from a regionally accredited college or university. Expertise in guided pathways and data analytics. Experience with holistic support, including mental health partnerships, food insecurity initiatives or emergency grant programs. Knowledge of change management and AI integration.
