The Blinn College District is searching for a Full Time – Reference and Instruction Librarian at our RELLIS and Bryan Campuses.

Job Summary

The Reference and Instruction Librarian provides research assistance and teaches information literacy skills to support student learning and academic success. The role collaborates with faculty, delivers library instruction, and connects users with appropriate information resources

Principal Accountabilities

  • Promote information literacy by teaching students the knowledge and skills to access and evaluate information effectively, using current technologies in a classroom setting.
  • Participate in the development, implementation and evaluation of effective library instructional programs.
  • Provide reference and research services to students, faculty and other library users using electronic and print tools and resources.
  • Design and develops library instructional materials and guides in various formats.
  • Participate in management and configuration of the library integrated software, website and electronic databases.
  • Collaborate with faculty regarding library assignments, instruction, collection development, etc.
  • Participate in library planning and the development of policies and procedures.
  • Participate in evaluation and development of the library collection.
  • Train and supervise nonprofessional library staff; share in the management of public service operations.
  • Work collaboratively with college faculty and administration. Serve on faculty councils and committees.
  • Participate in professional activities and maintain familiarity with theory, practices and trends in college libraries.
  • Maintain and foster a study-friendly atmosphere in the library.
  • May also manage or participate in acquisitions, cataloging and processing procedures as needed.
  • May also provide inter-library loan services for faculty and students.
  • Perform other library and college related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications/ Required Degree, License or Certifications

Master’s degree in library science or equivalent from an ALA accredited program.

Minimum Competencies

  • Communicate effectively through strong written, oral and instructional communication skills.
  • Demonstrate effective interpersonal and computer skills.
  • Contribute collegially and productively in a team environment; exhibiting adaptability and flexibility.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of instructional concepts, methodologies, technologies and the goals of information literacy.
  • Demonstrate familiarity with library integrated software, databases, print and non-print resources relevant to academic libraries as well as the ability to use and teach them effectively.
  • Display the ability to work effectively and enthusiastically with freshman and sophomore students.
  • Demonstrate ability to use current technologies to facilitate instruction and reference duties and data collection.
  • Maintain personal responsibility for the quality and timeliness of work and achieve results with little oversight.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience teaching in a classroom setting using a variety of instructional approaches and technologies. Planning lessons and assessing learning outcomes of instruction sessions.
  • Experience providing individualized instruction in research methods through reference service using a variety of traditional and electronic resources.

Preferred Competencies

  • Experience designing research guides, preferably using LibGuides software.
  • Experience creating documents, spreadsheets, publications and presentations using Microsoft Office applications.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of OCLC’s WMS integrated library software system.

Special Notes To Applicants

This position will cover shifts at both the RELLIS and Bryan locations. Hours of work may include evenings and weekends.

This is a 12 month, benefits-eligible position. Blinn College pays 100% of health insurance for full-time employees, 50% for dependents, and two times your annual salary in life insurance benefits. Yearly leave time includes:

96 hours vacation
40 hours discretionary
16 hours personal
8 hours sick each month.
Paid leave for college designated holiday’s, spring break, Thanksgiving, and Christmas break (approx. 25 days per year)
